RESOLUTION NO. 1085
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING THE BOARD
OF SUPERVISORS OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY TO PROCEED WITH ACQUISITION OF LANDS AND THE
SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENT OF A SOUTH COUNTY AIRPORT FACILITY.
WHEREAS, the need for a South County Airport is recognized by the resi-
dents of this area; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the Cities of Morgan Hill and Gilroy have recently
met and jointly agreed to support the County in the development of an airport in
the San Martin area after determining that an airport at that location would pro-
vide the greatest optimum of utility, accessibility, and general benefit to the
greatest possible number of the South County residents; and
WHEREAS, there currently exists no adequate airport for light airplanes
in this area, local businesses and services to the area must depend upon airports
and appurtenant services located at substantial distances from the business centers
of the South County; and
WHEREAS. such an airport facility would be a most tangible and constrUc-
tive boost to the general areas economy; and
WHEREAS, an airport would be in accord with your Honorable Board1s estab-
lished policy for the development of a County Airport System, the Friedland Report
and the recent General Aviation Plan accepted by your Honorable Body; and
WHEREAS, representatives of the Federal Aviation Agency and the California
Aeronautics Division have stated that there is a need for a regional airport in the
South County, that could qualify for various Federal and State Grants; and
WHEREAS, the Director of the California Aeronautics Division has more
recently urged that the County proceed with the San Martin facility this year in
federal
order to qualify for a possible 50%/grant, to protect this site from any additional
committments which could preclude an airport development within possibly one year,
and to provide a facility that will contribute the economic health and continued
growth of Santa Clara County; and

WHEREAS, an early acquisition of an airport site in this area would insulate
the County taxpayers from the continually increasing land costs in the area, which
are estimated to be increasing by approximately 10% per year.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Gilroy, County
of Santa Clara, State of California, does hereby respectfully request and urge
your Honorable Board to include funds for the development of a South County Airport
in the County.s 1967-68 Budget.
