RESOLUTION NO. 1046
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY. STATE OF CALIFORNIA,
GIVING CONS I DERATION TO COMMEMORATING THE HI STORY-MAKING ESTABLISHMENT OF
CALIFORNIA'S FIRST PERMANENT SETTLEMENT.
WHEREAS. Captain Gaspar de Portola. assisted by Father Junipero
Serra. established the first permanent settlement in California on July 16.
1769. in San Diego, after suffering many hardships. and
WHEREAS, from this early and precarious beginning, California has
grown into the greatest state in the union, a record of achievement unsur-
passed in the annals of man; and
WHEREAS, this milestone should be chronicled and emphasized so that
everyone in the state will become aware of this significant event in our
rich cultural and historical heritage; now. therefore. be it
RESOLVED BY THE C ITV COUNCI L OF THE CITY OF GILROY J STATE OF
CALIFORNIA, That the Members of the legislature proclaim the year 1969 as
California's Bicentennial Year, and declare their intent to give considera-
tion in 1967 to (I) the creation of a California Bicentennial Celebrations
Commission for the purpose of celebrating the statels 200th anniversary
in the most appropriate fashion. (2) the commemoration during 1969 and 1970
of the discovery of the Bay of San Francisco In 1769, the establishment
of the second permanent settlement in the City of Monterey on June 3, 1770.
and the founding of the first California missions in 1769 and 1770; and
(3) the recognition of the magnificent and exquisite flowers and shrubbery
which bless this great state; and be it further
RESOLVED that this Resolution be adopted at the request of the
Chief Clerk of the Assembly in accord with Assembly Concurrent Resolution
No. 52 adopted in Assembly May 27, 1966 and in Senate May 26, 1966 relative
to California's Bicentennial Celebration in 1969.
