Resolution 1074 .~ ~ > RESOLUTION NO. 1074 WHEREAS, birth defects are the second greatest destroyer of life in the United States, and WHEREAS, hundreds of thousands of surviving birth defect victims are doomed to lifetimes of physical and mental disability, and WHEREAS, birth defects impose staggeri.ng emotional, social, and financial stresses on the family and the community, and WHEREAS, under the auspices of the March of Dimes, signifi- cant progress is b~ing made to solve these problems, and WHEREAS, the March of Dimes is conducting a national educa- tion program aimed at protecting the health of mothers-to-be and their babies through prenatal care, and WHEREAS, a network of March of Dimes-supported centers includ- ing Stanford University Medical Center, is providing improved treatment for birth defect patients, and WHEREAS, March of Dimes research grants are enabling scientists to learn more about birth defects, and WHEREAS, individuals can play an important role in the control and prevention of birth defects by supporting the March of Dimes, NOW THEREFORE, I, Kenneth L. Petersen, Mayor of the City of Gilroy, do hereby proclaim January, 1967 as March of Dimes Month, and call on all citizens to contribute generously to fight birth defects, this awful menace to the health of our children.
