RESOLUTION NO. 741
A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING A GILROY HISTORICAL MUSEUM
AND APPOINTING ARMAND WHITE HISTOR~ AND CURATOR OF
SAID MUSEUM.
WHEREAS, the City of Gilroy in the County of Santa Clara
appears to have a fine, prosperous and impressive future before it,
and much planning is being done to assist in the orderly expansion
of the City and the furnishing of the necessary or desirable
facilities for the future comfort and convenience of its people; and
WHEREAS, generations come and go with their thoughts centered
upon the happenings of the day and the prospects of the future; and
WHEREAS, though all of the foregoing is true and we should
look to the future and give heed to the present, nevertheless it
is also very important that our thoughts should be directed at
times to the exciting and glorious past history of Gilroy and the
South County of which we are all so justly proud; and
WHEREAS, ordinarily no one can be found who has the ability
or will take the time or trouble to search for, ascertain and
record the past events that go to make up the history of a
community or area or who will obtain the documents and mementos
or other evidence commemorative of past occurrences and they are
eventually irritrievably lost in the lapse of time.
WHEREAS, the Library and Cultural Commission of the City of
Gilroy has called to the attention of the Council that there now
exists on the lower floor of the City Library what should be
recognized as a historical museum of this area, the collection of
which is largely due to the indefatigable labors of Armand White
who is not only mainly responsible for getting the collection
together, but has himself cataloged over 800 of the more than
1000 items now in the museum and who is very desirous of seeing the
exhibits extended and is willing to take charge of the museum and
act as its Curator and Historian without pecuniary obligation to
the city; and

WHEREASz the Council believes that official recognition should
be given to the fact that such a museum exists and to the part
that said Armand White has played in making the museum possible; and
WHEREAS~ it is essential to the preservation of said museum
as it now exists as well as to secure the additions thereto which
the future will provide tha~ someone who is not only interested
in and familiar with the purposes of such a museumq but who has
a knowledge of the earlier history of the City and surrounding
area and the ability to properly assemble the collection of
museum items, be appointed Historian and Curator of the said
museum and said Armand White has all of said qualifications.
NOW 1 THEREFORE 1 BE IT RESOLVED AND IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that
the said museum constituting the collection of historical items
of this area now housed in the Library Building of the City of
Gilroy be and it is hereby officially established as the Gilroy
Historical Museum and that said Armand White, in recognition of
his very valuable services and accomplishments in making the
museum possible, be and he is hereby appointed as Historian and
Curator of said Museum; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the said Library and Cultural
Commission should be and is hereby commended for becoming
interested in and calling this important matter to the attention
of the Council.
