RESOLUTION NO. 614
RESOlUTlON NO. 614 RELATIVE TO A SOUTHERN PAC[F[C COMPANY PROPOSAL TO ACQU[RE
CONTROL, THROUGH STOCK OWNERSHlP, OF THE WESTERN PACIFlC RAILROAD COMPANY.
WHEREAS, there is pending before the Interstate Commerce Commission, in
Finance Docket Nos. 21314 and 21315, a proposal by the Southern Pacific Company
to acquire control, through stock ownership, of the Western Pacific Railroad
Company; and
WHEREAS, the maintenance of a healthy and efficient rail transportation
system is essential to the continued economic growth and well-being of the
City of Gilroy; and
WHEREAS, the elimination of duplicate and other wasteful services is vital
to the City of Gi lroy rail transportation system if it is to compete effective-
ly with other modes of transportation; and
WHEREAS, the Southern Pacific Company proposal would make it possible to
cut costs through coordination of operating facilities, to help keep freight
rates at lowest possible levels by reducing rai I road operating costs and improve
services to shippers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED BY THE CITV OF GlLROV, concerned that it shall have the cheapest
and most efficient rai I service possible, does hereby endorse the Southern Pacific
Company proposal to acquire control of The Western Pacific Railroad Company,
and does respectfully urge the lnterstate Commerce Commission to grant the Southern
Pacific Company petition to acquire such control through stock ownership.
