RESOLUTION NO. 79 - 85
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY RECOGNIZING
ALCOHOLISM ACTION MONTH.
WHEREAS, Alcoholism has been recognized as a complex,
progressive disease by the American Medical Association since
1956; and
WHEREAS, this disease interferes with the health, social
and economic functioning of the affected individual, family and
community, and may result in physical incapacity, permanent mental
and emotional damage and/or premature death; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated that one out of every ten people
are alcoholic and three to four people are directly affected by an
alcoholic, it is further estimated that in Santa Clara County one
hundred twenty thousand (120,000) people are alcoholic and four
hundred eighty thousand (480,000) to six hundred thousand (600,000)
significant others are directly affected by Alcoholism; and
WHEREAS, this year has been pronounced the Year of the Child;
and;
WHEREAS, an estimated eighty percent (80%) of the children
from alcoholic homes will become or marry alcoholics and/or continue
to be affected directly during their adult lives by Alcoholism; and
WHEREAS, efforts aimed at high risk groups, early detection,
education, research, and quality treatment facilities are the greatest
forces operatng today for the reduction of Alcoholism.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Gilroy, does
hereby recognize November 22nd through December 25, 1979 as
"ALCOHOLISM ACTION MONTH"
and endorses the theme
