RESOLUTION NO. 81 - 28
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY ENDORSING
THE CALIFORNIA RESOURCE RALLY APRIL 20-26, 1981.
WHEREAS, more than 46 million tons of non-hazardous solid
wastes are generated each year in California while many of the
State's 600 sanitary landfills are closing for want of space or
failure to meet health and safety standards; and
~IEREAS, Californians s~end more than $600 million each
year to collect, transfer, haul and bury solid wastes that contain
hundreds of millions of dollars of valuable energy and materials
that could be reused, recycled or otherwise recovered; and
WHEREAS, the problem of litter continues to plague Ca1if-
ornia's cities and counties costing the taxpayers an additional
$100 million a year to handle; and
WHEREAS, the State Solid Waste Management Board is the
agency responsible for initiating and encouraging statewide and
community programs in solid waste management planning and enforce-
ment, recycling, resource reuse, energy recovery, litter control
and public education and participation; and
WHEREAS, the State Solid Waste Management Board--with
the support of dozens of California public interest groups, business-
es and local governments--is sponsoring the Great California Resource
Rally to be held April 20-26, 1981, to raise Californianst awareness
of the State's impending garbage crisis and encourage citizen parti-
cipation in litter control, recycling and waste reduction activities;

WHEREAS, the Gilroy City Council having a critical leader-
ship role to play in helping to find solutions to Ca1iforniats solid
waste management challenges.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Gilroy City
Council hereby endorses and supports the objectives and goals of
the California Resource Rally, and urges citizens and city personnel
and agencies to participate in and support recycling, litter control
and waste reduction activities throughout the year especially during
the Rally week of April 20-26, 1981; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Gilroy City Council urges
each community organization and agency to adopt similar resolutions
which endorse and support the Great California R.esource Rally; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Gilroy City Council urges
each citizen, community organization and agency to take immediate
steps to consider the ways in which they can become involved and
participate during the California Resource Rally Week and in the
Gilroy Clean Up Day, Saturday, April 25, 1981; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Gilroy City Council endorses
all recycling, litter control, waste reduction and resource recovery
activities and further urges all citizens to personally maximize the
reuse and recovery waste resources, especially paper, motor oil,
aluminum, grass and news print.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 16th day of Harch, 1981, by the
