Resolution 1981-68 . . .,~ RESOLUTION NO. 81 - 68 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY HONORING THE UNITED BROTHERHOOD OF CARPENTERS AND JOINERS OF AHERICA AND LOCAL 354. WHEREAS, One hundred years has passed since the founding on August 8, 1881, of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America; and WHEREAS, In that time, a small band of craftsmen has grown to number close to 800,000 working men and women in a wide variety of skills and industrial pursuits; and WHEREAS, Secretary-Treasurer Peter J. McGuire of the Carpen- ters played a strong, leading role in the creation of the American Federation of Labor, as demonstrated by the fact that he (l) issued the August 1881 call for the founding convention of the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions, which later evolved into the AFL; (2) issued the call in September 1881 for the Structural Alli- ance, a forerunner of the present AFL-CIO Building and Construction Trades Department; and (3) was presiding chairman of the 1886 conven- tion when the American Federation of Labor was established; and WHEREAS, The commitment of the Carpenters to improvement of the working conditions of its members has always been coupled with a firm determination to assist the progress of the communities in which they live and work; and WHEREAS, Since the days of their first officers, President Gabriel Edmonston and Secretary-Treasurer Peter J. McGuire, this union and its members have stood in the front ranks of those who further the twin ideals of democracy and trade unionism, to the benefit of this community and its citizens; and WHEREAS, The UBC, during its century of existence, has been a bulwark of the rights of working people, of democracy, of the advancement of society, and of the strength of our nation; and RESOLUTION NO. 81 - 68 -1- . . .!" WHEREAS, Testimonials abound in this city to the dedication of the members of this union to excellence in public and private endea- vor; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Gilroy hereby congratulates the United Brotherood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, and Local 354 of this city on the union's cen- tennial anniversary, with sincere thanks for its contributions over the years to the public welfare; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be fur- nished to the officers of Local 354 of the United Brotherhood of Car- penters and Joiners of America.
