RESOLUTION NO. 81 - 91
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY ENDORSING
CALIFOP~IA'S SAFE SCHOOLS WEEK.
WHEREAS, there has been insufficient attention devoted to the
reduction of crime on school campuses, and vandalism losses of $100
million per year in California are seriously depleting our education-
a1 institutions' financial resources; and
WHEREAS, it is the duty of all citizens and institutions to
help improve the safety of students and teachers in our schools and
restore the effectiveness of schools in helping educate students to
become responsible citizens; and
WHEREAS, the last 10 Gallup Polls on education have indicated
discipline to be the primary concern of citizens; and
~~EREAS, better reporting of school crime and a greater wi11-
ingness of persons to testify are essential to the control of crime
on campus and the improvement of justice for youth; and
WHEREAS, creating a better understanding of the nature of
school safety and juvenile justice problems will help achieve the
key goals of school crime reduction and restoration of fairness and
effectiveness to the administration of juvenile justice~
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY the City Council of the
City of Gilroy that the members hereby take this opportunity to
request the Honorable Edmund G. Brown Jr., Governor of the State
of California, to officially acknowledge October 19th through
October 23, 1981, as "California Safe Schools ~veek".
BE IT FURTHER P~SOLVED, that suitably prepared copies of
this resolution be transmitted to Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.
and to the local school districts.
