RESOLUTION NO. 83 - 56
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY ORDERING THE
CITY CLERK TO PUBLISH NOTICE OF GENERAL ELECTION FOR MUNICIPAL
OFFICERS TO BE HELD IN THE CITY OF GILROY ON NOVEMBER 8, 1983, AND
REQUESTING THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS IN CONJUNC-
TION WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS TO PROVIDE FOR THE CONSOLI-
DATION OF THE GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION WITH THE GOVERNING BOARD
MElffiER ELECTION TO BE HELD IN GILROY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, GAVILAN
JOINT COlWUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT TO BE HELD ON NOVE11BER 8, 1983.
WHEREAS, the Charter of the City of Gilroy as amended makes
provision that a general municipal election shall be held on the
regular election date established by the Election Code of the State
of California, as it now exists or may hereafter be amended, in each
odd-numbered year, commencing with the year 1975, for the election
of officers and for such other purposes as the Council may prescribe,
and
wllEREAS, the regular Governing Board Member election will be
held on Tuesday, November 8, 1983, and it is the desire of the
Council that said general municipal election be consolidated with
said regular election; and
WHEREAS, the law applying to a municipal election requires that
the Council provide for the giving of notice of the election;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of Gilroy, as follows:
Section 1. That a general municipal election shall be held
in said City and the same shall be consolidated with the Governing
Board Member election to be held on Tuesday, November 8, 1983, for
the purpose of electing one (1) Hayor and three (3) Council Members.
Section 2. That the City Clerk give notice of the said e1ec-
tion in accordance with law and to perform all other acts which are
required for the holding and conducting of the said election.
Section 3. That pursuant to Part 2.5 (commencing with Section
23300) of Division 14 of the Elections Code and Section 5342 of the
Education Code, the City Council of the City of Gilroy hereby requests

the Board of Supervisors of the County of Santa Clara, the Santa
Clara County Superintendent of Schools, the Governing Body of such other
political subdivisions, or any officer otherwise authorized by law in-
cluding the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters, to partica1ly or
completely consolidate said General Municipal Election with the Govern-
ing Board Member Election to be held on Tuesday, November 8, 1983, by
the Gilroy Unified School District and by the Gavilan Joint Community
College District, insofar as the City of Gilroy is concerned, and to
provide that upon consolidation, the consolidated election shall be held
and conducted, the election officers appointed, the voting precincts
designated, the ballots printed, polls opened and closed, the ballots
counted and returned, the returns canvassed and all other applicable
proceedings to be performed in connection with above consolidated e1ec-
tion shall be regulated and done by the Registrar of Voters of the
County of Santa Clara in accordance with the provisions of applicable
laws regulating consolidated elections; and, that this City Council
consents to such consolidation.
Section 4. The City Clerk is hereby authorized and directed to
certify to the due adoption of this resolution and to transmit certi-
fied copies thereof to the Board of Supervisors of Santa Clara County,
the Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools, the Gilroy Unified
School District, the Gavi1an Joint Community College District and the
Registrar of Voters of the County of Santa Clara.
