RESOLUTION NO. 86 - 46
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY ENDORSING COUNTY
PROHIBITION OF TRUCKS OVER 45 FEET IN LENGTH ON STATE HIGHWAY 152
BETWEEN CARLTON ROAD IN SANTA CrJJZ COUNTY TO SANTA CLARA COUNTY LINE,
AND WATSONVILLE ROAD IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY TO SANTA CRUZ COUNTY LINE.
w~EREAS, a combination of conditions on portions of State High-
way 152 between Watsonville and Gilroy are of concern with respect to
the safety of the general public, said conditions including general road-
way alignment, travel speeds, and width of traveled lanes that require
trucks to encroach into the opposing line of traffic; and
WHEREAS, improvenents to correct these deficiencies of not
scheduled for the foreseeable future; and
w~EREAS, the California Vehicle Code, Section 21101(c), authori-
zes local authorities to adopt rules and regulations to prohibit the use
of particular jighways by certain vehicles with the approval of the
Department'of Transportation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF GILROY THAT:
1. The Boards of Supervisors of the County of Santa Cruz and
the County of Santa Clara are hereby urged to prohibit trucks over 45
feet in length from the section of State Highway 152 between Carlton
Road in Santa Cruz County to Santa Clara County line, and Watsonville
Road in Santa Clara County to Santa Cruz County line in accordance with
the provisions of the California Vehicle Code, Section 21101, Sub-section
(c). Trucks are hereby defined as tractor-trailer combinations with a
total length of 45 feet. The designated alternate route for vehicles
prohibited on Highway 152 shall be Highway 129. '
2. An exemption to the aforementioned truck prohibition should
be granted to trucks that nust enter the restricted area for the purpose

of providing services, making pickups or deliveries of goods, wares, and
merchandise, or delivering construction materials to a site within the
restricted highway segment.
3. That signs should be posted by the counties and the state at
all access points to Highway 152 warning drivers of trucks over 45 feet
in length of the prohibition.
