RESOLUTION NO. 87 - 53
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY SUPPORTING THE GILROY HISPANIC
CULTURAL FESTIVAL.
WHEREAS, through the collective efforts of committed Gilroyans, among them
local business, professional and civic leaders, hispanic and non-hispanic, the idea of a
festival to celebrate the rich heritage of our community's hispanic roots has become
reality, September 4th, 5th and 6th, 1987, Gilroy will host the First Annual Hispanic
Cultural Festival; and
WHEREAS, designed to celebrate the contributions of the entire Spanish speaking
world the festival will offer foods, crafts, art and the music of the Spanish speaking
countries of Europe, South America, Central America, North America and the Caribbean.
Participants will include representatives of embassies, state and local governments and
various ethnic clubs and performing groups. This year's highlight will be two
performances by Jose Feliciano on Saturday, September 5th; and
WHEREAS, Gilroy, because of its large and growing hispanic population and its
historical beginnings amidst the ranchos of old Spanish land grants with California
Missions nearby is an appropriate setting for such a festival. Sharing the influence of
Spain and the Spanish language with cities like Guadalajara, Quito and Buenas Aires,
Gilroy invites hispanics and non-hispanics alike to share in the richness of this
cultural heritage; and
WHEREAS, based on the successful structure of the Gilroy Garlic Festival there
will also be a direct benefit to the Gilroy community. Volunteers, upon whom the
Festival will rely almost entirely, will share in any profits realized as contributions
to charities or organizations of their choice. Much of any income from the Festival to
the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will be returned to the community through increased
commercial activity, contributions and scholarships; and

WHEREAS, the Gilroy Hispanic Cultural Festival celebrates the unique character
of Gilroy with its great spirit of community, and in a special way, will help us to
enjoy our unique Gilroy Heritage.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Gilroy City Council that the Gilroy
Hispanic Cultural Festival is endorsed and supported by the City of Gilroy and invites
all members of the community to join in the spirit of this event on September 4th, 5th
and 6, 1987 which will provide enjoyment and excitement for all Gilroyans and our
visitors.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 6th day of July, 1987, by the following vote:
AYES: COUNCILMEMBERS: Kloecker, Mussallem, Valdez and Hughan.
NOES: COUNCILMEMBERS: None
ABSENT:COUNCILMEMBERS: Albert, Gage and Palmerlee.
