RESOLUTION NO. 88-3
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
GILROY ENDORSING FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS TO
HIGHWAY 152 AS TOP PRIORITY FOR FUNDS TN SANTA
CLARA COUNTY
WHEREAS, Highway 152, also known as Pacheco Pass Highway,
is one of the deadliest stretches of road in all of California;
and
WHEREAS, several hundred persons have been killed in
accidents on Highway 152 since 1970, and hundreds more have
suffered critical injuries; and
WHEREAS, Highway 152 is the major east-west artery
between the Bay Area and Central Coast and the San Joaquim
Valley and serves the entire state of California; and
WHEREAS, safety should be the top priority in the
allocation of public funds for transportation; and
WHEREAS, the current safety improvement projects along
the highway are a good start, but there are many deadly miles
remaining; and
WHEREAS, hundreds of citizens from all walks of life and
all counties and cities in the Pacheco Pass area are actively
calling for further improvements to Highway 152; and
WHEREAS, Highway 152 now has first priority for funding
for further work on the highway; and
WHEREAS, the Highways and Bikeways Committee of the
Santa Clara County Transportation Commission has recently
recommended that further improvements to Highway 152 be removed

from top priority to thirteenth priority for funds in our
county;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council
of the City of Gilroy urges the Santa Clara County Board of
Supervisors and the Transportation Commission to retain first
funding priority for Highway 152.
