RESOLUTION NO. 89 - 12
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY AFFIRMING THE CITY'S POSITION IN
FAVOR OF A STATEWIDE BAN ON THE SALE AND POSSESSION OF SEMI-AUTOMATIC, MILITARY-
TYPE ASSAULT WEAPONS.
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the City of Gilroy to support efforts to
promote public safety; and
WHEREAS, due to their high rate of fire, semi-automatic, military-type
assault weapons and related weapons pose an even greater danger to the public
safety than other kinds of firearms which are currently regulated under state law;
and
WHEREAS, semi-automatic, miliary-type assault weapons are not subject to
State of California licensing procedures and application requirements for the sale
and purchase of firearms capable of being concealed on the person and are as easy
to purchase as other firearms under current state law; and
WHEREAS, the use of semi-automatic, military-type assault weapons by
drug dealers and others has increased dramatically in California and nationwide
during the past several years and has resulted in numerous deaths and injuries; and
WHEREAS, very recently there were five children killed and over thirty
other children were wounded on a Stockton schoolyard as a result of shots fired by
a deranged man firing an AK-47 semi-automatic rifle; and
WHEREAS, significant legislation, including AB 257 and SB 292, have been
introduced in the California legislature and, if passed and signed by the Governor,
would result in the protection of the public against semi-automatic, military-type
assault weapons.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY:
The City of Gilroy affirms its support for legislation banning the sale
and possession of semi-automatic, miliary-type assault weapons.
