RESOLUTION NO 90-38
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY
ADOPTING SOUNDWALL STANDARDS
WHEREAS, after study, the Director of Public Works has
prepared and recommended adoption of a policy concerning
soundwall standards for the City of Gilroy, and good cause
appearing therefor,
NOW, THEREFORE. BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City
of Gilroy approves the following standards and adopts the same to
apply in the City of Gilroy:
SOUNDWALL STANDARDS
PURPOSE: The purpose of this standard is to specify design
standards for soundwalls which are better able to resist
earthquake damage and to eliminate those designs which have shown
poor performance during earthquakes.
DESIGN: The minimum design standard shall conform to the
latest revision of the Uniform Building Code with revisions that
has been adopted by the City of Gilroy, except as supplemented by
the following General Notes:
Unacceptable designs are:
1. A pre-cast wall and post assembly which is welded to a
reinforced concrete pier. This type of wall exhibits a
tendency to crack or break the weld at the base of the
post.
2. A pre-cast wall panel which is mounted between two posts
which are built-up of concrete blocks with unreinforced
wall retainers. The retainers on this type of wall
exhibit a tendency to break off, in some cases resulting
in the collapse of the wall.

3. Designs which meet the structural requirements of the
UBC but have elements which will contribute to failure
in an earthquake in the opinion of the City Engineer.
