Resolution 1992-42 . . . ~ RESOLUTION NO. 92 - 42 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY SUPPORTING THE TRANSFER OF MOFFETT FIELD TO NASA WHEREAS, the Gilroy City Council was supportive of efforts in 1991 to recommend the transfer of Moffett Field to NASA upon departure by the Navy, which is scheduled for October 1994; and WHEREAS, the Moffett Field complex, which includes use by Silicon Valley industries, impacts all of Santa Clara County; and WHEREAS, there is concern that the introduction of general aviation at Moffett would have serious consequences for these industries; and WHEREAS, the proposed operation of the County Airports by the City of San Jose has regional implications and impacts several Santa Clara County Cities __ including Gilroy; and WHEREAS, San Jose is currently pursuing an FAA study of general aviation at Moffett prior to final determination of future uses by NASA. Such a study is not only premature, but inappropriate in view of the fact that Moffett will remain a federal facility. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that: 1. The City of Gilroy continues to support the transfer of Moffett Field to NASA Ames Research Center, which benefits the whole of Santa Clara County and Silicon Valley. 2. The City does not support a proposal to make Moffett Field a reliever airport for San Jose International and move general aviation to Moffett, which would have serious impacts on the industries in Santa Clara County. 3. The City does not support the recommendation of the San Jose General Aviation Task Force and the concurrence of the San Jose City Council for the City of San Jose to assume operation of all the County airports with the exception of Reid-Hillview. We oppose their efforts to close Reid-Hillview (which has impacts on other facilities) and assume operational control of the County airport system. 4. The City supports the position that the expansion of San Jose Airport beyond the corporate boundaries of the City of San Jose to include all of the County airports is a regional issue. All communities impacted by these facilities must be part of the planning and decision making process. RESOLUTION NO. 92 - 42 -1- ~ . . 5. This resolution shall be sent to Mike Honda, Supervisor of District 1 with copies to all members of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. 6. This resolution shall also be sent to Congressman Tom Campbell, Congressman Don Edwards, Congressman Norm Mineta, Senator John Seymour and Senator Alan Cranston, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Defense.
