RESOLUTION N6. 93 - 3
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY SUPPORTING WEEK-END AND HOLIDAY
CALTRAIN SERVICE
WHEREAS, The Peninsula Commute Service (CALTRAIN) presently serves the
counties of San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara and communities from Gilroy to
San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, CALTRAIN service is provided between the cities of San Francisco and
San Jose on weekends and holidays; and
WHEREAS, CAlTRAIN service is not presently provided from San Jose to Gilroy on
weekends and holidays; and
WHEREAS, one of the purposes of mass transit systems is to reduce automobile
trips and to reduce the impact of automotive exhaust pollutants in an effort to
improve air quality; and
WHEREAS, the communities in Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Francisco counties
would benefit by improvements of air quality, economic and other business gains,
increased mobility of residents, improved recreational opportunities, improved
quality of life and increased ridership for CALTRAIN; and
WHEREAS, extension of GILTRAIN service from San Jose to Gilroy on weekends and
holidays, could be accommodated with existing rolling stock and track and signal
facilities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that
(l) The City Council of Gilroy supports the extension of GILTRAIN service
from San Jose to Gilroy for weekends and holidays to be consistent
with service provided for all communities from San Jose to San
Francisco.
(2) The City Council of Gilroy encourages necessary study and
implementation of extended GILTRAIN service at the earliest possible
date.

(3) The City Council of Gilroy encourages support of this concept from
the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, the counties of Santa
Clara, San Mateo and San Francisco, all communities within these
counties, all county transit boards or similar agencies, the CALTRAIN
to Gilroy Policy Advisory Board, the City of Morgan Hill and all mass
transit advocate groups.

and GAGE.
