RESOLUTIOH HO. 94 - 21
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY CONDEMNING THE TACTICS OF PHILIP
MORRIS TO UNDERMINE THE LOCAL COMMUNITY'S AUTHORITY TO PROTECT RESIDENTS AND
WORKERS FROM THE DANGERS OF SECONDHAND SMOKE.
WHEREAS, the statistics on tobacco and secondhand smoke are grim; and
WHEREAS, according to a UCSF study, the annual cost of smoking in Santa
Clara County is $311,659,000 or $208.11 per resident; and
WHEREAS, an estimated 50,000 Americans die each year from illness from
secondhand smoke, a Class A carcinogen; and
WHEREAS, secondhand smoke causes as many as 300,000 cases of bronchitis
and pneumonia in children each year; and
WHEREAS, annual cigarette sales in California amount to $4.5 billion
compared with $7.6 billion for the cost of the adverse health affects of smoking;
and
WHEREAS, charging California smokers for smoking-related medical costs and
productivity losses would add $3.43 to the price of each pack of cigarettes; and
WHEREAS, it has been reported that Philip Morris Inc., the nation's
largest cigarette maker is endorsing a ballot measure that would repeal all of the
antismoking measures passed by California cities.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, on behalf of our entire community, the
Gilroy City Council condemns the tactics of Philip Morris to undermine the local
community'S authority to protect residents and workers from the dangers of
secondhand smoke.
