RESOLUTION NO. 94 - 87
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY PERTAINING TO THE PRESERVATION OF
SIGNIFICANT TREES.
WHEREAS, the City Council finds and declares that the existing and future
trees that are both indigenous and non-indigenous in the City of Gilroy are a
valuable and distinctive natural resource. The trees of the City of Gilroy augment
the economic base through agricultural production, encouragement of tourism and
enhancement of the living environment. These resources are a major component of
both the highly localized and area wide environment; and
WHEREAS, the environmental benefits which result from the planting,
preservation, and maintenance of trees in the City of Gilroy are:
Moderating climate extremes and wind;
Maintaining animal habitat, possibly including habitats of endangered
species;
Maintaining soil conditions resulting in reduced erosion of soils,
reduced susceptibility of flood hazards and reduced risk of landslides;
Reduced cost of construction and maintenance of drainage systems through
watershed preservation;
Increased environmental benefits of trees in neighborhoods, such as noise
reduction, oxygen replacement, carbon dioxide reduction, interception of
particulates and aesthetic qualities; and
Increased quality of life; and
WHEREAS, the preservation and maintenance of significant trees on private
and public property is necessary to protect the natural beauty of the area, protect
property values and prevent undesirable changes in the environment.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT in keeping with the City of Gilroy'S
tradition of planting and maintaining trees, and thereby being known as a Tree City
USA, the City Council hereby encourages all citizens to preserve and maintain the
significant trees that comprise the urban forest in the City of Gilroy.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 19th day of December, 1994, by the following
vote:
AYES: COUNCILMEMBERS: GILROY, KLOECKER, MORALES, ROGERS, ROWLISON,
VALDEZ and GAGE.
NOES: COUNCILMEMBERS: None
ABSENT: COUNCILMEMBERS: None
