RESOLUTION NO. 97-46
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY
SUPPORTING INCREASED PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE TO GILROY
WHEREAS, passenger rail service is economical, efficient and reduces air pollution; and
WHEREAS, the City of Gilroy is situated at the crossroads of major traffic routes linking
the Central Valley to Southern California with the San Francisco Bay area; and
WHEREAS, increasing passenger rail usage serves to improve the quality of the
environment, reduce highway expansion demand and congestion, and increase the use of existing
infrastructure to meet the needs of California's expanding population; and
WHEREAS, increased passenger rail service serving the City of Gilroy will benefit the
residents of Gilroy and surrounding communities who can use these services for business and
pleasure travel to the San Francisco Bay and the Monterey Bay areas; and
WHEREAS, Gilroy is investing significant capital funds to restore the Historic Gilroy
Rail Station as an Intermodal Transportation Center, focusing on connecting surface
transportation systems with passenger rail service; and
WHEREAS, Gilroy seeks to become a stop for AMTRAK@ and other through passenger
rail service; and
WHEREAS, Gilroy seeks to become a stop in the InterCity Rail System to be provided
between the San Francisco Bay area and the Monterey Bay area; and
WHEREAS, increased passenger rail service serving the City of Gilroy will allow for
more efficient capital expenditures by government agencies and private businesses to develop
interconnecting surface transportation systems between outlying cities and the Intermodal
Transportation Center in Gilroy; and
WHEREAS, becoming a stop for through passenger rail service will benefit not only the
community of Gilroy but other communities through the interconnection of surface transportation;
and
WHEREAS, the interconnection of surface transportation between Gilroy and
surrounding communities and the Central Valley will provide for a more efficient transportation
system;

NOW THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED THAT:
The City of Gilroy expresses its desire to join with surrounding communities to develop an
efficient and economical rail transportation system serving the San Francisco Bay - Monterey Bay
corridor; and that
The City of Gilroy encourages all rail transportation agencies and organizations to
recognize the beneficial aspects to Gilroy and the surrounding communities of having passenger
rail service along this corridor stop in Gilroy; and that
The City of Gilroy expresses its desire and intention to work with these agencies and
organizations to insure that through passenger rail service stops in Gilroy; and that
The City of Gilroy will focus its efforts on insuring that through passenger rail service
stops in Gilroy, and to help obtain sufficient funding to meet this objective.
