RESOLUTION NO. 2001-80
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
GILROY RESPONDING TO A REQUIREMENT OF SECTION
50088 OF THE CALIFORNIA GOVERNMENT CODE TO
STATE REASONS OR IMPLEMENT A VETERANS'
PREFERENCE PROGRAM
WHEREAS, the City Council has approved certain rules and regulations applicable to
personnel hiring; and
WHEREAS, California Government Section 50088 requires the City, by January 1, 2002,
to either establish a veterans' preference program within it hiring policies and procedures or
provide a statement by resolution explaining why a veterans' preference is not implemented; and
WHEREAS, there is a need to further study the implications and alternatives of adopting such
a policy, including whether this law is in conflict with other state laws, such as Proposition 209.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF GILROY AS FOLLOWS:
The City Council of the City of Gilroy finds that more time is needed to evaluate the
establishment of a veteran's preference program within the City of Gilroy's hiring process, and the
City will further consider implementing such a program as soon as the results of City Staff's
evaluation are available.
