Resolution 2003-10 ~~ RESOLUTION NO. 2003-10 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY PLEDGING SUPPORT TO THE COALITION AGAINST BIGGER TRUCKS IN ITS CAMPAIGN TO MAINTAIN CURRENT TRUCK SIZE AND WEIGHT LIMITS, AND ENDORSE HR. 3132 WHEREAS, the US Department of Transportation has determined that multi-trailer trucks could be expected to experience an 11 % higher overall fatal crash rate than single trailer trucks; and WHEREAS, the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute determined that there is a strong statistical link within the same truck configuration between higher weights and a greater risk offatalities; and WHEREAS, certain industries are building lobbying campaigns for longer and heavier trucks on major US highways; and WHEREAS, the reauthorization of major transportation appropriations legislation will occur in 2003; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City of Gilroy hereby pledges our support to the Coalition Against Bigger Trucks in its campaign to maintain current truck size and weight limits, and endorse H.R. 3132, the Safe Highways and Infrastructure Preservation Act, which will serve to protect public safety.
