RESOLUTION NO. 2004-98
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY
REQUESTING THAT THE PUBLIC EMPLOYEE RETIREMENT SYSTEM
BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE THE EXTENSION OF TEMPORARY
SERVICE FOR HUGH G. HOLDEN, INTERIM FIRE CHIEF PURSUANT TO
GOVERNMENT CODE SECTION 21221 (H).
The City Council of the City of Gilroy hereby resolves as follows:
WHEREAS, the City of Gilroy includes its own Fire Department as a component
of the delivery of emergency services; and
WHEREAS, the former Fire Chief accepted a position with another agency and
the City of Gilroy is in the process (final stages) of completing an executive search to fill
the vacant position; and
WHEREAS, Chief Holden drawing on exceptional skills and knowledge
necessary to fulfill the requirements of the position predicated on his past employment
history as a tenured fire chief; and
WHEREAS, Hugh G. Holden, a retired PERS employee, has provided
approximately 890 hours of very specialized administrative and executive oversight for
the Fire Department's delivery of emergency services; and
WHEREAS, the executive search, testing and selection process to replace Hugh
G. Holden in his present capacity as Interim Fire Chiefwill be extended beyond the
maximum number of authorized hours in anyone calendar year as set forth in
Government Code Section 21222(h).
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council ofthe City of
Gilroy that a request is made of the Public Employee Retirement System Board of
Directors that Hugh G. Holden receive approval to extend his temporary employment as
Interim Fire Chief beyond the maximum limit of 960 hours yet not to exceed a total of
one year.
