Resolution 2009-02 - 1 - RESOLUTION NO. 2009-02 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY ENACTING THREE "GREEN" POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS. WHEREAS, the City of Gilroy recognizes the significant threat of Global Climate Change; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Gilroy has directed City staff to explore alternatives for enhance "green" practices; and WHEREAS, the Santa Clara County Cities Association has adopted three recommendations for voluntary adoption by all Santa Clara County cities; and WHEREAS, the City of Gilroy participates in the Green Building Collaborative of the Santa Clara County Cities Association in recognition that the promotion of the "green" building design will reduce the impact Global Climate Change; and WHEREAS, the LEED rating system of the US Green Building Council is recognized internationally as the standard for commercial and industrial "green" building design and evaluation; and WHEREAS, requiring a "green checklist" for all residential and commercial development proposals over 5,000 square feet will provide the City of Gilroy with the opportunity to monitor and encourage "green" building practices in private development; and WHEREAS, the City of Gilroy recognizes and values the importance of greening City facilities as a means of reducing the impact of Global Climate Change and by requiring LEED Silver certification for all new or renovated municipal facilities over 5,000 square feet, the City of Gilroy will reduce its environmental impact, and set a positive example for private development; RESOLUTION NO. 2009-02 - 2 - NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Gilroy enacts three "green" policies as follows: 1. The City of Gilroy recognizes the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Rating system and Build It Green's GreenPoint rating system as the official green building standards for commercial and residential development within the City; 2. The City of Gilroy will require the completion of a "Green Checklist" for all building applications constructed within the City; 3. The City of Gilroy will require that new city facilities or renovations of facilities of 5,000 square feet or more, other than the City of Gilroy library approved by the voters in November 2008, be constructed or renovated at the LEED Silver rating standard, if doing so is deemed financially feasible by the city council, and after the completion of a feasibility study that confirms that Silver LEED standard can be achieved.
