Resolution 2011-27 1 RESOLUTION NO. 2011-27 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY IN SUPPORT OF A CALIFORNIA STATE BUDGET THAT PROTECTS FUNDING FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND SCHOOLS WHEREAS, the Gilroy City Council strongly urges the California State Legislature and Governor to approve a state budget that appropriately funds local schools and that does not diminish funding to municipalities, pass unfunded state mandates onto local governments, or interfere with local programs in support of economic development and job creation; and WHEREAS, the education of our children is a shared value of parents, schools and our society in general and therefore one of the highest priorities of our shared social experience; and WHEREAS, schools and students are in need of a stable budget approach that provides them the funding necessary to carry out their mission of creating the best educated children that are prepared to compete in the global workplace; and WHEREAS, the state's inability to find a solution for its budget deficit creates financial uncertainty and harms California's image on the World stage; and WHEREAS, state and local funding for schools has been cut by more than $18 billion, or about $1,900 per student in the last three years; and WHEREAS, Gilroy Unified School District has cut $6 million from its budget over the past three years as a result of ongoing statewide cuts to education funding and the City of Gilroy has cut $13 million from its budget over the past three years as a result of the economic impacts of the Great Recession; and WHEREAS, Gilroy Unified School District will be forced to cut up to an additional $10 million from its budget if the Legislature does not find a budget solution to prevent such extreme budgetary cuts. RESOLUTION NO. 2011-27 2 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Gilroy emphatically supports a state budget that preserves local municipal funding and that adequately funds the provision of public education for our students and that does not harm local funding sources, impose unfunded state mandates on local governments or harm local programs in support of economic development and job creation.
