Minutes 1925/07/13 2.54 Gilroy, Calir., July 13, 1925. The regular arljournecl meeting of the Common Council of July 6th, 1925, was called to order by His Honor Mayor Jas. Princevalle. Present Councilmen C. H. Pierce, H. Brem, 81"., C. B. Fredrickson, Wm. RadtI{e, Geral<l Hecker; Absent Counctrnen, None. The Mayor announcell that this meetint!; was callerl f'or tlte purpose of canvassing the vote ror Counciman at the qpecial election held on July 8th. -. Motion by Wm. Hadtke, secon(1ecl by R. Brem, Sr. that we proceed to canvass t~e ballot cast at the Special Election. The Clerk presented the returns rrom the Boards of' Election at the two precincts. By motion or Fredl"ickson, seconded by Hecker and carried the folowin~ resolution "as a(loptecl WHEHEAS, rrhe Mayor and Common Council of the City ofGil- roy, did on t~e 13th day of July, 1925, canvass the vote cast at the special election held in Gilroy on the Rth day of JUly, 1925, for the purpose of electing a Councilman to rill the va- cancy caused 'by the cleath or Charle~ W. Schemel, and arter having canvassell the vote finds that the total num'her of votes cast was 152. . That Elmer J. Chesbro received 367 votes and that the scattering votes amounted to 5. NOW THmmFOHE, as a result of the vote cast at the special elevtion the Mayor anrl Common Council hereby declare that Elmer J. Chesbro, is elcted to the office of Councilman of the City or Gilroy, and that a certificate of election be 2~55 issuell unto him. Vote, Ayes, Councilmen C. H. Pierce, R. Brem, Sr., C. E. Frerlrickson, Wm. Hadtke, Geralrl Uecker; Noes, Councilmen, None; Absent Councilmen, None. By motion of Hecker, seconded by Fredrickson and carried the follo~in~ resolution was adopte~: Charles W. Schemel, who was a ~,lember of the Common Council of the City or Gilroy, (tiell on the 28th llay or April, 192e;, af~er a brief illness. Charles W. Schemel was born in nil~oy, on the 10th day of September, lR73, grew to manhood in his native city, re~eived his education in the local schools, ,acquired his business taain- ing with the Pacific Telephone Com~any, and at the time of his death was manager of the Gilroy Telephone Company. He leaves surviving him, his mother; his wife, Mabel Lynn Schemel, a son; C. W. Schemel, Jr. amI a. daughter; Isabelle. He was a 'lutirul son, a good amI lovin.e; husbancl and father, a faithf'ul friend and above all a thorough Christian Gentleman. He wa~ four times electe,l to the office of CouncilI'1an aml w.!s serving his fourtlt term. As a Councilman he was prompt and ret;ular atten(lant at meetings :lnrl his business traininl! made him a valuable public s~rvant. His efforts were always for the betterment of the public in- terest of Gilroy, and in his work he had the confidence of all our people because of his unquestion~d honesty an{I inte,p.:ri ty. The memory of his labors with us will inspire us to p.;reater ef- forts for the improvements and a(lvancements of our city. We will miss him but his work will not be forgotten. BE IT IU~SOINtm, that by the reason of the rleath 011 Chartes w. Schemel, a council has lost a faithful member and the City of Gilroy has lost a valuable public servant, anrl the community at large an enterprising, energetic and wobthy citizen, and be it further ..
