This regular mont hly meeting of the Common Council i8 oalled to order by His Honor Mayor George C.K1lias,Jr. Present Counoilman: George A.Mart1n,George M.Mason,Nat Heiner, J.H.Wentworth. Absent:Couneilmen: Jack Rogers ,James Battersby. Minutes of the meetings of January 6th an4 l3th.l~41, are read and approved. f; Motion by Counoilman Heiner,seeonded by Counoilman Wentworth and carried that Leon Thomas be appointed Police Judge from January l5, 1941 to January 15,1942 at a salary of $75.00 per month. A communioation is read from the Southern Pacifio Company stating that investigation is being made in regard to the oondition of certain crossings within the City of Gilroy. 600 The City Engineer reports that he aooompanied a railroad company engineer on a tour of inspeotion ot the crossings complained of. A communication is read from Logan and Frazer,city auditors, stating that examination of the oity's books and accounts had been made to the quarter ending Deoember 31,1940, and everything was found in order. A communication is read from the Paoifio Indemnity Company, oalling the attention of the Mayor and Counoil the condition of the sidewalks on the following streets: Monterey between 1st and 2nd;Monterey street and the Fowler property;Monterey at the Church property- North o~ First Street;2nd street between MOnterey and Eigleberry; Eigleberry street between 3rd and 4th streets;7th Street near Churoh; Church between 1st and 7th streets;Rosanna Street between 70 South and 320 North;7th street-~OO block;Banna Street -first block and seoond block;Alexander near MartinjAlexander near old Gilroy;Forest Street; also noted that the north end of Forest Street-no barrier or stop sign. This matter is referred to the Street Committee with the reoommenl..' ation that the Superintendent of streets make a thorough inspeotion of all sidewalks and report the names of owners and oondition of sidewalks fronting their property, throughout the oity. Mr.E.E.Eustioe of C>>esbro and Eustioe. appears betore the Gouncil to disouss the placing of extended coverage on all of the oity's fire insurance polioie~ the total cost to be $61.11 per year for a 18 riod of five ,.ears. l.- ~ I - Motion by CounCilman Martin, seconded by Councilman Heiner and carried that extended coverage be added to all of the city's fire insuranoe polioies. The City Engineer reports that progress is being made in the matter of opening an alley from 3rd Street to Fourth Street between Monterey and Eigleberry streets, a majority of the property owners along the proposed route signifying a willingness to sign the necessary deeds. The City Attorney recommends an appraisal oommittee be appointed to view the property of those unwilling to sign the necessary deeds. The Mayor announces that he will appoint an appraisal committee to view the property under disoussion this committee to be accomp- anied by the City Engineer when they view the property. The Mayor discusses the sale of the Old Septic Tank property,Old Gilroy and East streets,and suggests that this matter be handled through bide. The Clerk is instruoted to return the cheok ot George C.Benz ....i ..'~1 ~ I .....4 601 which he submitted with an offer to purchase the Old Septic Tank prop erty. The Mayor announces that the matter of the sale of the Old Septic Tank property will be taken up at a later meeting. Counoilman Heiner discusses the placing of a street lite on Forest Street near East 7th Street. Counoilmen Rogers and Wentworth are to investigate this matter. city Engineer Hanna discusses the meeting of trustees of the I.O.O.F.Home and the Filice and Perrelli Canning Company offioials with reference to changing the channell of Miller Slough. The City Engineer states that the Division of Highways has made a a request for an additional $200.00 from the Gasoline Tax money to maintain state highways. Motion by Counoilman Mason, seconded by Councilman Wentworth and oarried that an additional $200.00 be granted to the Division of Highways fram the Gasoline Tax money far the purpose of maintenance o~ state highways, as requested. The Council mow disousses the possibility of using Gas Tax mone7 to impDove Railroad street, south 0 f Old Gilroy street and improve~ - '. ment of Church street, south of Sixth street. The Clerk announces that the crosswalks have been painted on Old Gilroy street at .J. the intersect ion of Chestnut and Oltl Gilroy streets and Maple and Old Gilroy streets and that the'Division of Highways approved School Crossing signs are now in use. The Water Superintendent is instruoted to erect a new fenoe along the Burchell Road side of the city reservoir property. R~orts of the City Officers are presented and read. Motion by Counoilman ~~son, seoonded by Councilman Heiner and carried that the reports be acoepted as read ani placed on file.
