This regular monthly meeting of the Common Council is called to order
b7Shis Honor Mayor' George C.Milias,Jr.
Present:Councilmen George M.Mason,James Battersby,J.R.Wentworth,
David V.Stout.. Absent:Councilmen George A.Martin,Nat Heiner.
Minutes of the meetings of June 7th and June l4th,1943 are read and
approved.
A communication is read from Pearl G.Lavin, Librarian, asking ~~ an
extension of time in which to present the yearly report.
The monthly report of the Health Department is presented and read
and ordered placed on file.
An application for transfer of liquor licenses from Charlie. Bontadelli,
d.b.a. Central Cafe, to Paul Rima, is presented. Do abjection is made.
Councilman Wentworth asks that. permission be granted to' allow Traffic
Officer Norman Goodrich to accompany the Gilroy Rural Fire Truck to
fires outside the city limits and to assist t.he driwer of the truc:k in
fighting fires; the request being made due to the shortage qf manpower.
It is unanimously agreed to grant permission for t he Traffic Officer
to assist the Rural Fire Department, providing the insurance of the
rural fire department and the insurance carried by the <::i ty would not
conflict and provided, further, that the Traffic Officer use his own
judgment as to how long he should remain at a fire and away :from his
,
duties as Traffic Officer. The matter of insurance protection is placed
in the hands of thw City Attorney for his opinion.
Reports of City officers are presented and read.
Motion by Councilman BatterSby, seconded by Councilman Stout and
carried that reports of city officers be accepted as read and placed on
file.
Councilman Battersby discusses a complaint that. had been made to him
712 in regard to card games being played in places where liquor is sold.
''fhe' City Marshal is asked by the Mayor to express his views on the
subject and he reports that he had knowledge of two places on Monterey-
Street in which cards were played and liquor sold but that. he beiJLeved
that these places had discontinued this practice.
Motion by Councilman Battersby, seconded by Councilman stout and
carried that bills aSJ1 presented be allowed and warrants ordered
drawn on the Treasurer.
Motion by Coaneilman Stout, seconded by Councilman Mason and
carried that the War Damage Insurance carried by the city for the
past, year be continued for one more year at a premium of $221.40.
The City Attorney reports that the necessary papers had been
served on J.V.Oliveria, 197 South Eigleberry Sttteet, as directed
by the Council, June 14,1943.
Mr.\fill.iam Werner now appears before the Council to ask that the
bicycle racks that had been removed be replaced.
The Mayor instructs the ~uperintendent of Streets to replace the
bicycle raeks em Ifonterey street..
Mr.Sydney Johnson now appears before the Council to discuss the
great number of dogs running at large in his neighborhood and ower
his property and the influx of Mexicans into the southern part of
the city. Mr.Johnson stated that he did not object to the Mexicans
as people but objects to the class of houses they construct.
The Mayor states that he has discussed the contraction of sma11
homes, in t he southwestern part of the city, with t he chairman of the
Planning Commission and the Planning Commission *ill call a meeting
within the week, diseuss the housing matter and report their findings
to the Council.
The Mayor states that he will instruct the Poundmaster to make an
intensive drive on stray dogs.
Mr.Wil11am Werner now appears before the Council to ask f'or a
sum of $100.00 for an add for the ei ty in the centennial edi tion of
the Gilroy Dispatch. Mr..Werner urges the Council th discuss this
matter and urges favoratle action.
