Minutes 1945/01/02 77D Gilroy,California. .January 2,1945. This regular monthly meeting of the Cownon Council is called to order by His Honor Mayor George C.Milias. Present:Councilmen George A.Martin,George M.Mason,.J.H.Wentworth, David V.Stout. Absent:Councilmen Nat Heiner,Henry J.Schilling. Minutes of the meeting of December 4th are read and approved. Comrmnications are read from Mr.H.3.Hersman,chairman of the 6th War Loan Drive,the Division of Highways ,the Santa Clara County Health Department, the monthly health report from the County Hellth Department. Motion by Councilman Stout,seconded by Councilman Martin and Garried that the sum o~ $55.00 be donated to the Sixth War Loan Committe to be used to pay the expenses of the recent drive. The Oommunication from the Division of Highways with reference to the storm water condition in and around the Eliot School, is ordered placed on file. The health report is ordered placed on file. The letter from the Santa Clara County Health Department with ref- erence to conditions existing on the property of J.Scudero,Route, 1, Box 2,First Street,Gilroy, is referred to the City Insepctor with power to act. This being the time speoified in letters sent to the several oil companies request ing bids for th e c it y' s gasoline requirement s for the period January 15,1945 to .January 15,1946, two bids are presented and read; the Seaside Oil Company bid 14t per gallon f~ Silver Gull gasoline; the Union Oil Company of California bid $.1375 per gallon for " 76" gas 01 i ne . Motion by Councilman Stout,seconded by Councilman Mason and carried that the Union Oil Company of California be awarded the contract to furnish the oity mit~ with its gasoline requirements for the period .January 15,1945 to .January 15,1946 at the price of 13i cents per gallon for "76" gasoline. This being the time specified in an adveetisement calling for bids bids for public liability and fire, theft and collision insurance, two bids are p resented and read: the Pacific Ind'emnity Company represented by Chesbro & Eustice bid $620.70 per year on the Comp rehensive Liability Insurance and $336.27 on the fire,theft and collision insurance; the Travelers Insurance Company and the Travellers Indemnity Company represented by August A.Piedmont bidz: ~562.43 0- 780 per year on Comprehensive Liability insurance and i499.34 per year on the fire theft and collision insurance. Motion by Councilman Stout,seconded by Councilman Wentworth and carried that the Comprehensive Liability Ins~rance be awarded to the Travellers Insurance Company and the Travellers Indemnity Company on their bid of $562.43 annual premium -.,.polio!! .to be wri tt- en on a three year basis and the Pacific Indemnity Company be - awarded the fire,theft and collision insurance for an annual pre- mium of $336.27, pollcy written on a three-year basis. - RESOLUTION NO.145 is presented and read. Councilman Mason,chairman of the Finance COL1mittee now recommends .. . . that the general employees if the city be ralsed. en salary 10 per ~ cent of their monthly salary each month,effect1ve as of January 1, 1945; save the City Attorney and the Police Judge be each raised the sum of $25.00 each month, ef fecti ve also as 0 f January 1,1945; also that the City Marshal and C1 ty Clerk be each raised the sum of 10 per cent each month owing to extra duties they will be called upon to perform by the Mayor and Common Council due to war conditions. 781 Motion by Councilman Martin, seconded by Councilman stout and carried that the rai se in salaries as recommended by the Finance Committee be accepted as read. Transfer of liquor licenses from Wm.Economou to Ivan A.Bondi & Euthanasta C.Budros and application ~or liquor license of Fortino's Market,27 N.Monterey Street, are presented. No objection is made. Councilman Stout discusses the rquest made by the Gilroy Grange for more street lights near the Grange Hall on Swanston Lane and the request of the Babing Mortuary to place electroliers in the parking areas adjoing the mortuary on Eigleberry Street and on Fourth Street,at their own expense. These matters are placed in the hands of the Lighting Com;-'li ttee wit h power to act. The matter of the absence of Councilman Henry J.Schilling is discussed and Councilman V~rtin states that he will write to Council- man Schilling to ascertain what his plans for future are. The City Attorney discusses the poor lighting conditHm: that exists at the corner of Monterey and Lewis streets. This matter is placed in the hands of the Lighting Committee for investigation. ' Mr.daLappe, arclki tect, now appears before t he Council to discuss post war plans for the city. The Mayor states that he will appoint a committee on post-war planning. Motion by Councilman Stout,seconded by Councilman Martin and carried that?bills as presented be allov.ed and warrants ordered drawn on the Treasurer. Reports of the City officers are presented and...read. Motion by Councilman Stout,seconded by Councilman Martin and carried that the reports be accepted as read and placed on file. . The Clerk is instructed to return the certified checkspEesented with the bids for Comprehensive Liability Insurance and fire,theft and collision insurance as soon as the polioies have been approved by the City Attorney.
