This regular monthly meeting of the Common Council is called to
order by His Honor Mayor George C.Milias.
Present:Councilmen Ge~rge M.Mason,Nat Heiner,J.H.Wentworth,David
V.Stout. Absent:Councilmen George A.Martin,Henry J.Sch11l1ng.
Minutes of the meeting of January 7,1946 are read and approved.
A comrnunication is read from the Forestry Board recommending that
the following trees be planted in the newer subdivisions:l-Prurtus
Pissardii; 2-European White Birch; 3-Cut Leaf Weeping Birch;4-Arizona
Ash;5-Moaesto Ash;alee it was suggested that if possible each new

A comnunication is read from Logan and Frazer , City auditors, stating
that the regular quarterly audit for the period ended December 31,1945,
had been completed and they found the books of account and record in
good Q rder.
A co~nunication is read from the Gilroy Telephone Compahy Police
Radio Operators thanking the Mayor and Council for the dinner and
theatre entertainment provided for them.
A r~port of water samples taken by the Santa Clara County Health
Department,January22,19~6, with the notation that the samples are
satisfactory, is presented and read and ordered placed on file.
A cOillQinioation from the Sociedad Funeraria Of Gilroy,applying
for a permit to hold or give dances at the I.D.E.S.Hall on Old
Gilroy Street, on any day of the week inc luding Sundays, is presented
and read.
Letters from the James A Clayton & Company and 3ulius Scudero,
relative to the proposed opening of an alley from Hanna Street to
Carmel Street, between First Street and Broadway, are read and
the Clerk reports that John Reis is willing to give 10 feet for
an alley providing a building and a barbecue pit are moved;that
Mrs.M.A.Smith is willing to give ten feet providing a small
building is moved; 1,1r.Paul Agrillo is willing to give the necessa:x.:y
10 feet; that Mrs.Minnie Serpa is not in favor of giving any land
for the alley as she would receive no direct benefit from it. This
matter is turned over to the subdivider of the area through which
the alley would pass for further negotation.
Motion by Councilman stout,seconded by Councilman Wentworth and
carried that the recommendation of the type of trees to plant in
the newer subdi vis ions, be adopted, as presented by the Forestry
Bo ard .
The audit report and letter from the Police Radi? Operators of
the Gilroy Telephone COipan,y are ordered placed on file.
Mr.Donato Retez,past president of the Sociedad ]uneraria now
appears before the Council to discuss th~ application for a permit
to .hold dances.
Mr.Jack Thomas now appears before the Council to discuss the
ftssuing of dance permits.
Mr.George Porcella now appears before the Council to discuss the
issuing of dance permits.

The matter of dance permits is now discussed by the Mayor and
Council.and Ordinance No.331 relative to public dances, is read.
Motion by Councilman Stout,seconded by Councilman Mason and carried
that Sociedad Funeraria be granted a permit to hold Mexican dances,

said permit to be issued from time to time and dances to be alternated.
It is unanimously agreed that the City Clerk issue such permits
and he was instructed not to issue more than one Mexican dance permit
for anyone night;that an American dance may be held on the same night
as a Mexican dance and that dates for these dances be arranged for
ten days in advance of the date upon which the dance is to be given.
Applications for transfer of liquor licenses from James Lomas to
Eileen O. and William L.Corsiglia,420 First Street; Angelo Mainero
to Robert & Joseph Elia & James A.parra,? North r~onterey Street and
applications for One Sale Beer License by Felix Gonzalez 69 South
Monterey Street and J.C.Bray,30 Old Gilroy Street, are presented.
No objection is made.
Councilman Mason, chairman 0 f the Finance Committee, now presents.:
a list of delinquent tax properties, with city and county taxes
delinquent and states that the committee suggests that the city otter
the county 'lO~' on' theudollar for its tax title in the sa properties.
It is unanimously agreed that the entire matter of delinquent tax
properties be placed in the hands of the Finance Committee with power
to act.
A map of Tract 239-Renz Addition to the City of Gilroy, is presented
and the Mayor states ,that the Gilroy City Planning Commission
recommends its acceptance.
RESOLUTION NO. 152 is now presented and read.
Motion by Councilman Stout, seconded by Councilman Heiner that
RESOLUTION NO. 152 be adopted.

Whereas, George Renz and Harriet Renz, his wife,
have presented to the Mayor and Common Council of the City of
Gilroy, for filing, a plat or ~ap of the subdivision known as
"Tract 239, Renz Addition to the City of Gilroy, Santa Clara
County, California", covering land located in the said City
of Gilroy;
And, whereas, the said subdivision and the map

thereof has been duly ~~ointoe by the Planning Commission of
the said City of Gilroy, and by the Engineer of the said City
of Gilroy;

And, whereas, the said map is accompanied by the
certificate of George Renz and Harriet Renz, his wife, the
owners, dedicating to public use forever all streets and alleys
shown upon said map; and,
~ereas, the said subdivision appears to be a
proper one and of no disadvantage to the City of Gilroy, and
the map thereof appears in proper order;
~. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, and it is hereby
ordered, that the said map be, and the same is hereby, approved
and that all streets and alleys as shown upon said map be accepted
on behalf of the public; and,
Be it further resolved that the City.Clerk of the
City of Gilroy be, and he is hereby, authorized to execute up~n
beh~lf of said City of Gilroy, the Certificate required by law
to aocompany said map.

The City Attprney now compliments Mr.Ed.Hanna,surveyor, for his
excellent work.
The Mayor now compliments Mr.Ed.Hanna for his excellent cooperation
and the fine manner in which he presents matters of engineering
importance to the Council.
The Clerk is now instructed to make record of these two statements
in the minutes of this meeting.

The Mayor now discusses the matter of certain improvements for the

city stating that a program of street improvement,held in abeyance on
account of the war, should nowproceed, that the matter of S8wer ex-
tensions into the newly developed sections of the city should be
started along with water main extensions; that investigation should be
made of the proper site for a new water well and the matter of a
recreation park, now under study by the Gilroy City Planning CO~lission,
should be given serious consideration, when presented to the Council by
the Commission.
It is unanimously agreed that the Street Committee,

and Water Committee should proceed at once to prepare
the necessary figures as to cost,etc.,to be submitted to the Council
at the earliest possible date.

The Clerk in instructed to write a letter to the Federal Housing
Administ~ation stating that the following streets in the Gurries
Addition to the City of Gilroy will be graded,gravelled and oiled;
Church Street from First Street north to the end of Churhc Street as
shown on the subdivision map; Gurries Drive from Hanna Street east to
the end of this street as shown on the map of this subdivision and
Hanna Street from the end of the present paved portion, north to

The matter of rats at the garbage dump at sewer farm is discussed.
Mr.Ed.Piedmont nQw appears before the Council to discuss the matter

of local people dumping their garbage in the roadway at the sewer
farm. It is suggested that a proper sign be placed at the gnrbage
pit directing those using the privelege of dumping their garbage there
to dump their garbage in the pit. Mr.Piedmont states that anyone
requesting use of the garbage dump facilities should first obtain a
permi t from him.
Councilman ~entworth states that the new police car is not equipped
mth a jack or tire wrench. The Clerk is instructed to call Byers Bros.
and ask that these two pieces of equipment be supplied.

that the repoets of the city officers be accepted as read and placed

Motion by Councilman Heiner, seconded by Councilman Stout and
carried that the bills as presented be allowed and warrants ordered
drawn on the Treasurer.
