This regular monthly meeting of the Common Council is called to
order by His Honor Mayor George C.Milias.
Present: Councilmen George A.Martin,George M.Mason,Nat Heiner,
.r~.H.Wentworth,David V.Stout. Absent:Councilman Henry'J.Schilling.
Minutes of the meetings of March 4th and March 11th are read and
approved.
A communication is read from the Gilroy City Planning Commission
recommending that the ci ty purchase the property known as the "old
Phegley property", located and described as South l of Block 3
South,Range 3 West, as.l..the site of one of the proposed playgrounds.
A cO~Qunication is read from tre Department of Commerce,Bureau of
Census,stating that a census of the city would cost $600.00 based on
pbpulation figures of .,200.
A com munication is read from the Southern Pacific Company requesting
a permit to construct,maintain and pperate an industrial track across
Leavesley road to provid~ adequate service to the Be Ge Mfg.Co.
A communication is read from the League of California Cities
calling attention to the efforts made by Senator Beryl Salsman in
behal~ of municipal legislation at a recent session or the legis.
lature.
A repar t of water samples taken by the Santa Clara County Health
Department is presented and read and ordered placed on file.

that the City Engineer be instructed to sign the Supplemental Project
sta tement for resurfacing !o1onterey Street fr om the E ol'theast city
limits to the soubheast city limits far an additional cmount of
$2,700.00.

BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Common Council of the
City of Gilroy# at regular session assembled, that
Certain streets be designated as streets of major impor-
tance within the ~orporate limits of,the City of Gilroy.
WHEREAS# the State of California, through the Department
of Public Works, Division of Highways# requires that certain
streets within the corporate limits of the City of Gilroy be de-
signated as streets of major importance for the expenditure of
the one-fourth (t) oent gas tax funds allocated to said City, and
WHEREAS# the City Council desires that certain streets be
so designated and approved by the State of California# through
the Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, as streets
of major importance.
vForest street# from Ninth Street to Leavesley Road .
~Carmel Street, from First Street to Sixth street
vEigelberry Street, from First street to Tenth Street
vTenth Street# from Eigelberry street to Monterey street
~Railroad Alley, from Old Gilroy street to Depot Street

carried that a General I\lunicipel Election be held on Monday ,May 6,1946
that Stat e and County precincts 1,2,3 und 7 be consolida ted into one
precinct to be known as precinct "A" and the polling place for this
precinct be the Fire House located on Fifth Street, between !Lonterey
and Ei~leberry Streets; that State and County precincts 4,5 and 6 be
consolidated into one precinct to be known as precinct "B" and the
polling place for this precinct be located in the City Clerk's offi'Qe,
City Hall,3 East Sixth Street and the polling places for said election
be opened at 7 o'clock A.l.:1. and closed at 7 o'clock P.M. ,Monday,May
6,1946.

carried that the following named election officers be appointed for
the General :Municipal E~ection to be held I\f1onday,May 6,1946 and the
clerk instructed to make the necessary notice calling the ele ction
and notify the appointed Inspectors for this election: Name of
precinct-ttA";..Board of Elect ion: Inspector ,Elsie Cotta; Judges ,Lila
Ramezane and Mrs.Frances C.Eustice; Clerks-Mrs.Rose A.Chabot and Mrs.
Mary Howorth;alternate-Mrs.Edith Ayer; Name of Precinct "B"-Board of
Election; Inspector,Mrs.Nina Avery; Judges-Mrs.Mamie Sgheiza and Mr$.
Marian Eustis;Clerks-Leola Griffin and :B'anny Mc~uilkin;alternate
Mrs .Els ie Schieler; that the members of the election boards receive,
the sum of $8.00 each for their services.
ReDorts of the City officers are presented and read.
Motion by Councilman Stout,seconded by Councilman Hartin and carried
that the reports of the city officers be accepted as read and ordered
placed on file.
i'10tion by Councilman Stout,seconded by Councilman Martin and carried
that bills as presented be allowed and warran ts ordered drawn on the'
Treasurer.
The matter of the purchase of an M-Scope for the water department
is placed in the hands of the water cOIlJnittee with pov/er to act.
The matter of the condition of the grandstand and fences at the
Gymkhana grounds is discussed and it is unanimously agreed that the'
the fences,grandstand and other equipment should be put in condition
by the city.
