Minutes 1946/06/10 '"T 844 Gilroy,Caiifornia. June 10,1946. This regular adjourned meeting of the Common Council is called to order by His Honor Mayor George C.Milias. Present:Councilman George A.Martin,George M.Mason,J.H.Wentworth, Ray L.Stevens,James B.Tho.as. Absent:Councilman Nat Heiner. The Mayor announces that the purpose of this meeting is discuss with the governing boards of the Gilroy E~ementary and High School the question of olosing of oertain streets to permit the expansion of these plants. The Mayor calls upon Mr.Oliver Brown,superintendent of schools, to introduce those who will discuss the various problems confronting the schools. Mr.P.R.Colson,member of the Gilroy Elementary School board now Ap~ars before the Council to disouss the expansion of the ele- me-ntary schools-the Jordan School and the Elliot Schools requesting. the Council to order the cle.ing of Second Street from a point approximately 150 feet west of Hanna street west to. Carmel Street and Dowdy Street from Third Street to First Street. Mr.Colson stated that the school board would leave sufficien~ land to provide an alley in the rear of the dwellings along the west side of Hanna Street between Second Street and First Street. To provide for further expansion of the Elliot School the school board requested the closing of Maple Street from East Seventh Street to Old Gilroy Street. Mr.Sydney Johnson,member of the Gilroy High School Board, now appears before the Council to discuss the problems facing the plant expansion of the Gilroy High School. Mr. Johnson now intro- duces Dr.Chas.Burch,member of the school planning board,State Department of Education. ..,.. 845 Dr.Buroh stated that a unified plant required the closing of Forest street from I.O.O.F.Ave. to the north boundary of the high school property,located on the east side of Forest street. Mr.Ernest Kump;o~ the Ernest J.Kump Company,school house planners, now appears before the Council to discuss their study o~ the problem. Dr..Christiansen of the Kump Company now appears before the Council to discuss the financing of additional school raoilitles. The Mayor now discusses the provisions of the charter for closing streets. Old Gilroy Street. The Council ananimously agrees to look with disfavor on the high sohool project and suggestions made by their representative. ORDINANCE NO.446 is presented and read. Motion by Councilman Martin,seoonded by Councilman Wentworth that ORDINANCE NO.446 be adopted: ORDINANCE NO.~ AN ORDINANCE CONSENTING TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PORTION OF A HIGHWAY IN THE CITY OF GILROY AS A COUNrY HIGHWAY,TO-WIT:TF.AT PORTION OF TEE LEAVESlEY ROAD FROM THE EASTERLY LINE OF MONTEREY STREET TO THE EASTERLY LINE OF THE CITY LIMITS OR BOUNDARIES OF THE CITY OF GILROY,LYIID WITHIN SAID CITY OF GILROY. Vote on the motion: AYES: Councilmen George A.Martin,George M.Mason,J.H.Wentworth, Ray L.Stevens,James B.Thomas NOES: Counoilmen None ABSENT: Councilmen Nat Heiner. The matter of the parking of doctors cars near or in front Gheir offices is discussed. The Clerk is instructed to notify the Traffic Officers not to tag doctors cars and to write a letter to each doctor t' advising him of theC01il.ncil's action and suggesting that each doctor attached an M.D. plate to his license plate for purposes of identifi- cation. and ask that the privelege not be abused. The Clerk is instructed to contact the California State Automobile Association with reference to a sign to be plaoed at the interseotion of First & Monterey streets for the Gilroy Golf and Count7Y Club.
