Minutes 1947/09/02 r r , i . 937 Gilroy, California. Sept~ber 2,1947 This regular monthly meeting of the Common Council was called to order by his Honor, Mayor George C.Milias. Present: Counoilmen George A.Martin, George M.Mason, J.H.Wentworth and James B.Thomas. Absent: Councilmen Nat Heiner and Ray L.Stevens. Minutes of the meeting of August 4,1947 and August. 14,1947 are read and approved. A communication from the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce was read with reference to landscaping and beautifying the grounds around the Southern Pacific Depot. The Chamber of Commerce agreeing to assist the Council in every way in this proposed project. It is unanimously agreed to discuss this matter with the Southern Pacific officials and the letter from the Chamber of Commeroe was turned over to the Street Committee for investigation and report. A report on water samples taken by the Santa Clara Health Department as of August 19,1947 was presented and read and ordered placed on file. A communication from the Division of Highways with reference to routing all truck traffic to the San Joaquin Valley over the Leavesley-Ferguson road is read. It is unanimously agreed that the address of the Truck Owner's Association be ascertained from the League of California Cities and upon receipt of this information the Clerk is instruoted to write a letter to the Truck Owner's Association asking their cooperation in routing their San Joaquin Valley trucks, both the northbound and valley bound trucks, over the Leavesley-Fergus~ Road. A communication from the War Department, Corps of Engineers, with reference to contemplated work on Carnadero Levee under a Congressional appropriation is read. It is unanimously agreed that the City Engineer be designated as the authorized agent, of the City to meet with Colonel S.L.Karrick, District Engineer, to facilitate ~arly construction of the projeot. ~ 938 A communication was read from the Division of Highways with reference to the Collier-Burns Highway Act of 1947, with reference to streets of major importance. It is unanimously agreed that the Division of Highways be advised that streets of major importance as previously designated by the Common Council be reaffirmed and a letter be forwarded advising them ,- of this action. -.... The city Engineer presents a letter addressed to the Granite Construction Company of Watsonvil1e, California, granting them an extension of twenty-one (21) days under their contract for the construction of curbs and gutters on certain streets. Motion by Councilman Martin, seoonded by Councilman Mason, and carried, that the Granite Construction Company be granted an extension of twenty-one (21) days on their oontract to construct ourbs and gutters on certain streets in the City of Gilroy. A.communication from the Coast Counties Gas and Electric Company advising a disoontinuance of certain monthly charges, heretofore established in connection with the eleotrolier ...... ..... system, in the amount of $186.00 per year, and effective August 1,1947, is read. Application for an Off-Sale Beer and Wine License by Henry Kong,51 South Monterey Street, Gilroy, California, is presented. No objection is made. Councilman Mason reports that certain repairs to the pipe line at the dam are being held in abeyanoe due to scarcity of olass of pipe necessary to do the work. Councilman Mason reports that a request has been made for the extension of City water service north of the City Limits. It is unanimously agreed that the extension be granted under the same terms and conditions as all other water service ex- ~ I ' tensions outside the City Limits, viz: That the person making ~ the request purchase the necessary amount of 4" cast iron pipe, the City Water Department to do all work in connection there- with, all expense to be charged against the person making the request. The matter of a site for a new City water well is now discussed, the Mayor reporting that several locations along 93B .-'1 J i Hecker Pass Highway have been investigated. The proposition made by Harry C.Scholten to exchange Lot 12, Block 5 North, Range 7 West, for the extension of the City water main from ~ /' the South City Limits along theea~\ side of Monterey Road, approximately 660 feet, said extension to be of 4" case iron pipe, and a further extension easterly of approximately 20 i ......,J feet of 2" cast iron pipe is discussed. Resolution No.l82 is presented and read. Motion of ~ Councilman Thomas, seconded by Councilman Mason, a-4 ia.~!8a, that Resolution No.l82 be adopted. ....... RESOLUTION .!'ill..l82 BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Gilroy, at regular session assembled, that: A four inch (4") cast iron water main be connected with the main water main at the Southerly City Limits of the City of Gilroy on the Easterly side of Monterey Road; said four inch (4") cast iron water main to be extended fram said point alone the Easterly side of said Monterey Road approximately six hundred sixty (660) feet Southerly therefrom; at approximately ninety-eight (98) feet Southerly from the Southerly line of Bane's Lane there be constructed a four by four (4 x 4) inch "T" in the said four inch (4") cast iron water main, and; approximately twenty (20) feet of two inch (2") cast iron water main be also laid in an Easterly direction from the said point ninety-eight (98) feet Southerly of said Bane's Lane. Scholten, his wife, to the City of Gilroy, to Lot 12, Block 5 North, Range 7 West, in "Map Showing .Tames A. Clayton and Company's addition to the City of Gilroy" be recorded. 940 RESOLUTION llQ.183 BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Gilroy, that the said City of Gilroy hereby aocepts the conveyance hereto attached and consents to the recordation thereof. Said conveyance grants to the City of Gilroy Lot 12 in Block 5 North Range 7 West of the James A.Clayton & Co's Addition to the City of Gilroy, and wherein HARRY C.SCHOLTEN and LIBBIE A. SCHOLTEN, his wife, are Grantors, and the CITY OF GILROY, a Municipal Corporation, is Grantee. ~ Passed, approved and adopted this 2nd day of September, 1947, at a regular meeting of the Common Council of the City of Gilroy. The Mayor now reviews the sewerage disposal situation and states that in a conference with Mr.Generaro Filice of the Filice and Perelli Canning Company, that the Cannery has pro- mised to install a rotary screen at the Cannery by the 1948 season, and disposal of water used in cooling cans would be given further consideration. Reports of City Officers presented and read. Motion by Councilman Martin, seconded by Councilman Thomas, and carried, that the reports of the said Officers be accepted as read and placed on file.
