This regular monthly meeting of the Common Council
called to order by his Honor, Mayor George C.Milias.
Present: Councilmen George A.Martin, George M.Mason,
Nat Heiner, J.H.Wentworth, Ray L.Stevens and James B.
Thomas.
Minutes of the meeting of September 1,1947, September
2,1947, September 18,1947 and September 19,1947 are read.
Error in the minutes of September 2,1947, page 939, Line 4,
word west changed to east, and the minutes are then approved.
Communication was read from the Gilroy Parks and
Recreation Commission reoommending installation of wading
pool at First and Princevalle streets.
Communication is read from Dr.Russell R.Crane sub-
mitting his resignation as a member of the Gilroy Parks and
Recreation Commission due to ill health.
Communication is read from Adjutant Generals Office
with reference to placing of quonset huts on Auditorium
groundS to house vehicles of the local National Guard
company.
Copy of the communication from the Valley Express
Company advising all the drivers to comply with the councils
request on the use of Leavesley and ]'erguson Roads i~ read.
Communication is read from the Board of Supervisors
of Santa Clara COUftty stating that they have passed a
resolution returning that portion of Leavesley Road within
the City Limits of Gilroy to the City of Gilroy.
A report dated September 17,1947 of water samples
taken by the County Health Department showed all results
satisfactory.
A communication is read from the Gilroy Meat Company

making application for the extension of City sewerage and
water to their new proposed site on South Monterey Road.
A communication is read from the Division of Highways
requesting a map showing all underground encroachments
on state highways within the City.
A communication is read from Mr.Tom Sifton, Harley
Davidson agent, submitting figures requested on a new
motorcycleand trade-in for the City's present machine.
The matter of providing garage space for National Guard
vehicles is now discussed, it being the sense of the Council
that the City should not expend any money towards construc-
tion or purChase of buildings. The Clerk is instructed to
request the Adjutant General to send a diagram showing the
ground and type of building, or fencing, they desire, and
advise them that a limited amount of space is available.
Motion by Councilman stevens, seconded by Councilman
Heiner, and carried that the resignation of Dr.Russell R.
Crane, as a member of the Gilroy Parks and Recreation
Commission, be accepted.
The Mayor states that he will offer an appointment to
succeed Dr.Crane after a conference with Harold B.Long,
Superintendent of Schools.
The matter of the wading pool recommended by the Park
and Recreation Commission is discussed. It was the unanimous
opinion of the Council that nothing should be done in regard
to the wading pool until the new water well is completed and
the necessary buildings required to house the pumping plant.
It was further suggested that at the time this work is com-
pleted that the Parks and Reoreation Commission meet with the
Council to discuss this matter further.
Application of the Gilroy Meat Company for City sewerage
and water at their proposed new plant on South Monterey Road,
below Banes Lane, is discussed. Mr.Ed Hanna represents that
due to the contour of the ground it would not be possible to
connect with the City sewerage from the location indicated by
the applicant. It is unanimously agreed that the Clerk be
instructed to write to the Gilroy Meat Company and notify Mr.
Borelli, owner manager of the Gilroy Meat Company, to appear

before the Council at its regular November meeting or within
two weeks of October 6th if he so prefers.
The letter from the Division of Highways with refer-
ence to encroachment map is ordered tabled.
Motion by Councilman Thomas, seconded by Councilman
Martin, and carried, that the City purchase from Mr.Tom
Sifton one new 1948 model Harley Davidson motorcycle as
set forth in his letter dated September 27,1947 for the

sum of $801.81, to be delivereOVin two months. The radio
equipment of the City's present machine to be transferred
to the new machine without extra charge.

Motion by Councilman Heiner, seconded by Councilman
Martin, and carried, that the City sell to Mr.Tom Sifton
one Harley Davidson motorcycle No.45EL1264 for the sum of
$375.00, all subject to the delivery of a new motorcycle
to the City of Gilroy.
Councilman Heiner now states that there is under-
manning at the Fire House on various nights of the week.
It is unanimously agreed that the problem be discussed

with the firemen at the Firemens' Banquet to be held
Friday night, October 10,1947.

The Clerk is instructed to write to the Division of
Highways to ascertain the present status of the traffic
signals.
Councilman Mason represents that his Committee has
some information on deep well pumps but will secure more
before presenting the report to the Counoil.
Reports of City officers are presented and read.
Motion by Councilman Stevens, seconded by Councilman
Heiner, and carried, that the reports be accepted as read
and placed on file.

Motion by Councilman Martin, seconded by Councilman
Wentworth, and carried, that bills as presented be allowed

and warrants ordered drawn on the Treasury.
Mr.William Werner now appears before the Council and
states that the members of the local Police Department
are improving their marksmanship by regular target practice
being held in the basement of the Auditorium building and

suggests that the City could assist the men in the expense
of this activity. Motion by Councilman Heiner, seconded by
Councilman Mason, and carried, that the City purchase
powder, primers and lead for the Gilroy City Police to be
used in their target practice.
