This regular adjourned meeting of the Common Council
is called to order by his Honor, Mayor George C.Milias.
Present:Councilmen George M.Mason, J.H.Wentworth,
Ray L.Stevens and James B.Thomas.
Absent: Co~ncilmen Nat Heiner and George A.Martin.
The Mayor states that the purpose of the meeting is
to go into the recommendations of the Officers ~ the Board

of Directors of the Gilroy Volunteer Fire Department.
Recommendation No.1 that the Chief of the Volunteer
Fire Department be placed on a as a full time employee and
that the appointment of the Chief be subject to the recommen-
dation of the Flre Department as discussed.

Fire Chief Ramazane appears before the Council and states that
he is on duty some 130 hours a weeks, both in the rural and City
Fire Department and that his salary from the Clty is about
$141.50 per month.
Mayor Milias suggests and it is unanimously agreed
~ that since some of the recommendations involve expenditures of
lJ considerable sums of money it is advisable to postpone action
on these recommendations until Councilmen Heiner, Chairman of
the Fire Committee and Councllman Martinn are present with a
full Board.
Recommendation No.2 that two full time men be added
to the Department is discussed. Mayor Millas suggests that an
lnvestlgation be made in cities of approximately the same size
as Gllroy to see what is being done in the way of full time
employes in the fire department. Chlef Ramazane and Assistant
Chief Osborn explain the desireabillty of having two men on at
all times.

Recommendation No.3 concerning the purchase of a new

small flre engine ~ discussed. Chief Ramazane polnts out
that the majority of calls are for small fires and that many
times it would not be necessary to use the larger truck if a
smaller one was available. Also that it would be of use as

an auxillary fire truck at larger fires.

Recommendation No.4 that a 3t.~1~ portable flood
light be purchased was discussed. Chief Ramazane explains the
need of this piece of equipment.
Recommendation Nos.5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 relative to
the purchase of smaller items of equipment are discussed and
it is unanimously agreed that these items should,and would be,
purchased and would be referred to the Fire Committee when the
Fire Department was ready to purchase.
Recommendation No.ll requesting that the floor of the
flre house be made level is read. Mayor Milias states that he
believes this item was in the budget for this year and that the
necessary repairs to the floor should be made.
Recommendation No.12 relative to the purchase and
installation of four new alarm boxes for the newer sections of
town is read. It is unanimously agreed that these sections of

town should be protected and that the necessary additions
to the alarm system should be made.
Recommendation No.13 requesting that a drill
yard and training tower be secured is discussed. It is
suggested that the ground in the rear of the Auditorium
mlght be used for t his purpose.
Mayor Milias now brings before the Council the
condition of the fire alarm system as represented by the
Gamewell Company representative. Mr.E.D.Hollenbeck now
appears before the Counoil and states that the present
system is in need of repairs, that it is necessary to
install new wires to replace those with the insullation
off. The boxes should be cleaned and oiled and brackets

with the wires. He states that any local electrician

that the equipment inside the fire house, clock, board" etc.
should be serviced at the factory. He recommends that one of
the firemen ride the lines periodlcally after the system is
repaired. 'dhen requested for an estimate he states that the
system should be put in good order for $3,000.00, $4,000.00
or $5,000.00.

It is unanimously agreed that all matters pertaining
to the Fire Department be taken up at a special meeting on
Tuesday, November 18,1947.
Resolutions Nos.185 to and including 193 accepting
Grant Deeds to property for a proposed alley in Block 1 s.
Range 5 W. and Resolution No.194 acceptlng Grant Deeds to
property for the extension of Dowdy Stree~ between 7th and
8th streets are presented and read. Motion by Councilman
Wentworth, seoonded by Councilman Thomas,all~,.':l!'l~d, that
Resolutions Nos.185 to and including 194 be adopted.
Adopted this 10th day of November, 1947 by the

A resolution to annex certain property bounded on the
north by First street, on the west by Miller Avenue, on the south
by Third street and on the east by Princevalle street was referred
to the City Attorney to be redrafted.
A communicatlon from City Engineer,W.J.Hanna,recommending
a progress payment of $8,659.66, seventy five percent of the amount
due to the Granite Constructlon Company for construction of curbs
and gutters withln the City limits of Gilroy is read. Motion by
Councilman James B.Thomas, seconded by Councilman George M.Mason,
and carried, that a warrant be drawn to the Granite Constructlon
Company in the amount of $8,659.66.
Mayor Milias announces that due to the illness of the
City Clerk, P.A.Cox, addltional help would be necessary in the
office and that he had asked Rodney ~schenburg and he had agreed
to help out. The Council unanimously agrees that this arrangement
is s!ltisfaotory.
