This regular meeting of -the Common Counoil ls called to
order by his Honor, Mayor George C.Milias.
Present: Councilmen George A.Martin, George M.Mason,
Hat Heiner, James B.Thomas, Ray L.Stevens and J.H.Wentworth.
Absent: None.
The Mayor states that the purpose of the meeting is to
go into the recommendations of the Gilroy Volunteer Flre Depart-
ment which were discussed at the last meeting of the Council and
on which no action was taken.
Recommendation No.1 that the Chief of the Volunteer

Fire Department may be placed on as a full time employee of the
City of Gilroy; that he be appointed by the Council and that he
be recommended by the Fire Department is discussed. Motion by
Councilman Thomas, seconded by Councilman Martin, and carried
that the Fire Chief be placed on as a full time employee; that
he be appointed by the Council from two men recommended by the

Fire Department and that he serve at the will and pleasure
of the Common Council.
Recommendation No.2 that two full time men be
~dded:!to the Fire Department is discussed. It is stated
that the budget for this year is insufficient to bear the
expense of two extra men and Fire Chief Ramezane is asked
if the Department could get along with one full time man
until the next year's budget is set up. Chief Ramezane
states that if necessary the Department will get along until
that time. Motion by Councilman Heiner, seconded by Council-
man stevens, and carried, that one full time man be added
to the Fire Department; that he be appointed bv the Council
from two men recommended by the Fire Department and that he

serve at the will and pleasure of the Common Council.
Recommendation No.3 that the purchase of a new
fire engine be considered is discussed. It is unanimously
agreed that since this item was not provided for in this
year's budget it should be filed for future consideration.
Recommendation No.4 that a suitable portable
flood light be purchased is placed in the hands of the ]'ire
Committee to investlgate the different types and prices
and to report back to the Council.

Recommendation No.5 to 10 inclusive recommending
the purchase of smaller items of equipment is placed in the
hands of the F'ire Committee for purchase.
Recommendation No.ll that the floor of the fire
house be fixed and made level is stated to be provided for
in this years budget and is placed in the hands of Council-
man Heiner, Chairman of the ]'ire Committee, to arrange for
the necessary repairs.
Recommendation No.12 recommending the purchase of
four new alarm boxes to be installed in the newer sections

of town is discussed along with the general repair necessary
on the entire fire alarm system. It is unanimously agreed
that the city purchase four new fire alarm boxes, one to be
installed in the Gurries Tract, one at First and Carmel
Streets and one at 7th and Dowdy Streets and one to be kept
on hand for future needs. It is suggested by Councilman
Heiner and it is unanimously agreed that :Mr.E. D.Hollenbeck

be engaged to install the new boxes and to make the necessary
replacements and repairs to the lines and boxes in the system.
Councilman Heiner, Chairman of the Fire Committee is directed
to see that the board and equipment in the flre house is sent

to the factory to be serviced and repaired. Councilman Martin,
Chairman of the street Committee is directed to see that the

trees interfering with the wires in the fire alarm system be
trimmed.
Recommendatlon No.13 that an adequate drill yard and
training tower be secured is discussed and Councilman Heiner
was directed to investigate the possibility of using the grounds
at the rear of the Auditorium for this purpose. It is suggested
that a hydrant could be placed there if the space is suitable.
Mayor Milias requests the Fire Department, through
Chief Ramezane to submit two names for fire chief and two names

for a full time fireman for consideration by the Common Council
at its regular meeting, Monday, December lst,1947. The Mayor
states that the salary schedule for these positions could be
arranged at that t irne.

Mr.Ed Hanna presents a ~ 8~ML€ of wages and handling
costs of the local electrical firms for the installation of
traffic signals on Monterey Street.

Motion by Councilman stevens, seconded by Councilman
Martin, and carried that the schedule of wages and handling
costs as presented by the local electrical firms be accepted

: i subject to the approval of the state.

The redraft of a proposed resolution to annex
uninhabited territory bounded on the north by Hecker Pass
Highway, on the west by Miller Avenue, on the south by Third
street and on the east by Princevalle street is referred to
the City Planning Commission for study and recommendation and
the Deputy City Clerk is instructed to so notify the Plannine
Commission by letter.

Mr.Ed Hanna states that the necessary frontage on
First street for the proposed straightening of the highway at
that point can be purchased from Mr.Kuehling for $125.00.
Motion by Gouncilman Heiner, seconded by Councilman Wentworth,
and carried, that the property be purchase~for $125.00 and the
deed dll'awn.
Mr.Ed Hanna states that a seventy five percent pay-
ment of the balance due Breckenridge & Scott in the amount
of $1,884.11 on the new City well was due according to the
terms of the contract. Motion by Councilman Mason, seconded
by Councilman Heiner,and carried, that a warrant be drawn
to Breckenridge & Scott for $1,884.11 in accordance with the
terms of the contract.
Increased double parking on Monterey street and
overtime parking in twelve minute zones and parking in space
where the culvert was removed on North Monterey street across
from the theatre was discussed and it was unanimously agreed
that the traffic officers should be ordered to enforce the
law for these violations.
