Present: Councilmen George A.Martin,George MIMason, Nat Heiner, J.H.Wentworth,Ray L.Stevens,James B.Thomas. Absent:Councilmen None. Minutes of the meetings of January 5th,7th,12th and 16th,1948 are read and approved. A communi cat ion is read from t he Gilroy Chamber 0 f Commerce relative to the care of a small park space located on the east side of Monterey Street between Casey Street amd Leave'sley Road. The 9Z6 'chairman of the Street Committee states that the city crew has cleaned up the property and put 1~ in condition. A cO!llimnication is read from the Divis ion 0 f Highways reiati ve to charge to be made for city equipment when used in street work. The matter of drawing up a schedule was placed in thehands of the Street Committee and the Citu Engineer. A communication is read from the Chief of Police of San Jose relative -, to a school on Law enforcement that will be conducted during the months ....J of February and March. The City Clerk is instructed to place the co~nunication in the hands or the City Marshal to ascertain if he or any members of the police department would care to attend. A notice of claim for damages for bOdily inUury signed by Helen Scherrer is presented and read. and ordered filed. The Santa Clara County Health Department's report on water samples tested is presented and read. The Mayor advises the chaiman of the Water Committee to contact the health department officials in regard to the report of one srnnple taken. The report is ordered filed. A communication is read from the Pacific Fire Extinguisher Company relative to flood light equipment for the fire department. The matter - of a decision on this matter is laid over until the City Attorney can be consulted. .... Mr.Marcel Bracquet and Mr.Joffre Besson,representing local veteran organization now appear before the Council to request the use of Vlheeler Auditorium for dances twice each year for LasLAnims"Post of the American Legion and John Berri Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the minimum rental of $15.00 per night. Motion by Councilman Martin, seconded by Counc ilman Hei.ner and carried thet Las Animas Post of the American Legion and John Berri Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars be granted use of Viheeler Auditorium f twice each year for each organization,for the purpose of holding public dances, at tL$lii100peraight. rental. Mr.Hedborg offers to leave the type of siren he be lieves will be 9'7'7 satisfactory ,for trial, and it is unanimously agreed to have a tem- porary hook up made. The Iilayor announces that this is the time specitlried in a published notice for a hearing on the proposed almexation to the city of the area from First street to Third Street between Princevalle Street . and Miller Avenue. Due to the absence of the City Attorney it is unanimously agreed to to continue the hearing for one week. Fire Chief Ramezane states that he has contacted two men about the job:,ofextra fireman but so far he has not been successful in obtaining i ....L. a man. Councilman I\:iason discusses the purchase of a pump for the new city well and it unanimously agreed that the best pump available should be purchased. It is unanimously agreed that the Water Comrnittee draw up the specifications for the new pump and present them to the Counoil. The City Clerk reports that the City Attorney has advised him that the Union Oil Company's bid~; of $.194 per gallon for gasoline was the i;~~-.. lowest and best bid submitted. 978 Motion by Couucilman Martin,seconded by Councilman Stevens and carried that the Union Oil Company of California be awarded the gasoline business for the city from January 14,1948 to January l4, 1949 on their bid of ~~.l94 per gallon for "76" gasoline less one cent per gallon, their bid being the lowest and best bid. Motion by Counci+man Heiner,seconded by Councilman Stevens ,nd carried that the Buildings and Grounds Committee be given the authority to purchase the necessary drapesfor the stage at Wheeler Auditorium. discusses Councilman Stevens/the handling of certain equipment of the Police Department. The Mayor a m Council instruct the City Clerk to ask the City Marshal to be present at the next meeting of the Council,Monday, February 9,1948. Councilman Martin now submits the following recommendations for "STOP" signs: traffic moving north and south on Hanna street to stop at the intersections of Second,Jhird and Fourth streets; traffic going north on jrincevalle and Carmel streets stop before entering First Street; traffic goin south on Church street stop before enter- ing First Street;traffic going north and south on Eigelberry street stop at the intersection of Third Street. The chairman of the Street Committee is instTucted to have the City Attorney draw the necessary resolutions to effect the changes recommended. Reports of the City Officers are presented and read. Motion by Counci lman Stevens ,seconded by Councilman Martin and carried that the reports of city officers be accepted as read and placed on file.
