Min'ttes of the regular monthly meeting of August 2nd and regular
adjourned meetings of August 9th, and 23rd and the special meeting
of August 30th are read.
The City Attorney recommends that the last word in the first line
of the last paragraph of the minutes of August 30th be changed from
"special" to "committee".
Motion by Councilman Daniels,seconded by Councilman Stout and

Mr.William Werner now appears before the Council and states that
~n the minutes of the August 23rd meeting, the last ~ragraph on
page 1020 of minutes-book No.4-1948- does not set fprth any of the
words used by the City Marshal when he addressed the Council.

After considerable discussion on the matter of ohanging the word-
ing in the paragraph under discussion thefollowing action wastaken:
Motion by Counoilman Daniels ,seconded by Councilman Stout and
carried that the minutes of the meeting 0' August 23~d stand appro~ed
as read.
The Mayor now asks if there is any other objeotions to the minutes
of the meetings as read. No objection being made the Mayor now
declares the minutes approved.
A communication is read from the Division of Highways stating
that it is not necessary to take out insurance on traffic signals.
A communication is read from the Division of Highways stating that
they are returing the city's check in the amount of $10,250.00 which
was deposited with the divison to pay the city's share of the Traffic
signals and that a savings: of approximately $3,900.00 bad been made
as a result of the work of installing the traffic signals being done
by dE:\V labor.
A communication is reafl from the Junior Chamber of Commerce aSking
permission to hold a pet parade on Monterey Street on September 85th
at 1:15 P.M. and requesting the necessary police protection.
A petition signed by nine property awners residing on Swanston
Lane compla1nigg of dust and requesting that the street be oiled is
presented and read.
A report of water samples taken August l7th by the Santa Clara
County Health Department is presented and read and ordered placed
on file.

that the matter of G11ing Swanston Lane be referred to the Street
Committee.

Motion by Counoilman Stevens,seconded by Councilman Stout and v8rried
that the Gilroy Junior Chamber 0 f Commerce be granted permission to
hold a pet parade on Monterey Street from Lewis Street to Si~h Street
and west on Sixth Street~to Wheeler Auditorium on September 25th at
1:l5 p.m.
The Mayor instructs the City Clerk to notify the Polioe Department
of the date of the parade,the time and route to be followed.
The communications from the Division of Highways are O1'dred filed.
Mr.Justin Byers now appears before the Council and presents petitions
for annexation to the City 0 f Gilroy of the area bounded on the north
by the South line of Third Street on the south by the North line of
Fifth Street on the West by the East line of Miller Avenue and on the
east by the West corporate limit line of the City of Gilroy.
The petitions are placed in the hands of the City Attorney with
instructions to draw up the necessary resolution to be presented to
w
the Council September 13th.
This being the time specified in a legal notice oalling a hearing

The Clerk nowaskawhich fund the money to pay for fencing the Forest
Street play grounds should be taken from.
Motion by Councilman Stout,seconded by Councilman Daniels and carried
that the sum of $2,035.00 be taken from the Reserve Fund to pay for
the tence and installation of the same at the Firest Street play grounds.
The Mayor now presents the names of GeorgeAIMartin and Robert ~.Byers
to be members of the Board of Trustees of the Gilroy Free Publio Library,
to ta~ the places of Mrs.Catherine T.Ryan and Mrs.Mabel Schemel both
of whom have requested the Mayor t,o relieve them from further duties on
the board.

Motion by Councilman Stout,seconded by Councilman Stevens and carried
that George A.Martin and Robert K.Byers be appointed to the Board of
Trustees of the Gilroy Free Public Library.
The matter of stray dogs within the city is discussed and it is
unanimously agreed that the Poundmaster should call at the City Clerk's
office at 1 p.m. eaoh working day to ascertain if there are any
spend
complaints ab out dogs and that he should/at least one hour each work-
ing day in his work as poundmaster.
Applioation tor an On Sale Beer License for Joseph V.Varela,8l S.
Monterey Street;Beer and Wine 'Vholesalers license-transfer fro. Alfred
Ubriok and John R.Clark to Louis DeLorenzo and Victor Rizzi and an

that the rezoning of Eigelberry Street from "B" district to "C" distriot
be referred to the Gilroy City PlanningCommission for recommendation.

that the premium under the new fire insurance agreement be divided
as follows: 40% to Chesbro and Eustice; 20% to A.W. Brown; 20% to
August Piedmont and 20~ to G.B?Rodeck.
Councilman Mason asks when the swwer line; will be installed on Rea
Street and the Superintendent of Sewers states that the work will
start at once.
~ouncilman Mason states that he,the City Attorney and the City
Engineer have studied the bids for the pump house at the new well
and rec anmend that John Riksheim be awarded the work on his bid of

Motion by Counc ilman Mason, seconded by Counc ilman St out am carried
that John Riksheim be awarded the contract to erect the pump house at
the new city well on First Street on his bid of $ll40.00.
Mr.Voorhes representing A.W.Brown,one of the city insurance carriers,
now appears before the Council to disouss the division 0 f the business
between the several agents in the city.

The City Engineers office repoBts that the Division of Highways had
rejected the bids on the resurfacing of Forest Street, the lowest bid
being over- the engineer's estnnata, but had called the City Engineer'S
office later and rescinded their action. The matter 01 doing th*swork
by day labor is discussed and the City Engineer's office is instructed
to discuss this matter with the chairmn of the Street Committee.

Mr. William Werner now appears before the Council to discuss the
matter of permitting owners of frame buildings on Monterey Street to
modernize their fronts stating that he has observed that other cities
in the vicinity are permitting this to be done. The Mayor suggests
ana the Council concurs'1that the matter of dhY~t1gating what other
oi ties are doing be turned over to the ordinance oommi ttee for study.
Councilman Stout calls attention to the traffic hazard at the
~
intereseotion of Forest and Lewis streets amd suggests that a "STOP"
sign be plaoed at this intersection causing the east and west bound
traffic on Lewis Street to stop before entering I"cn"eat; St:ireet. This
mat tar is referred to the City Attorney to draw the proper resolution.
Councilman Stevens discusses the use of the Old Septio Tank property
for a oity corporation yard. This matter is referred to the Buildings
and Grounds oommittee.

carried that the reports of the city off! cers be accepted as read and
placed on file.
