Minutes 1949/08/01 1108 Gilro,y,California. August lt1949. This regular monthly meeting of the Common Council is called to order by His Honor Mayor George C.Milias. Present:Councilmen George M.Mason,J.H.Wentworth,Ray L.Stevenst James B.Thomas,Dale D.Daniels. Absent:Councilman David V.Stout. Minutes 0 f the regular monthly meeting of July 5th and the regular adjourned meetings ot July 6th and 25th and ~oard of Equalization meetings of July 8th, 11th and l5th,1949 are rea4 and approved. A report 01 1Jhe(:San'iaj)Clara(d.~ounty Health Department ot water ssnples ~aken July 28th and all samples rated satisfactory,is prese nted and read and ordered placed on file. A communication is read from the City Engineer stating that the plans and specitications for Project l5,Major City Streets,have been approved by the Division of Highways and recommending adver- tisement be made for bids. Motion by Councilman Daniels,seconded by Councilman Wentworth and carried that the reoommendation of the City Engineer be accepted and that legal advertisement be made calling tor bids for Project l5,bids to be opened August 18,1949. A oommunication is read from Mrs. Catherine R.Ryan stating that she intends to complete the unfinished building located on the north side o~ Eighth Street between Church and Rosanna streets within the next six months. Motion by Counoilman Daniels,seconded by Counoilman Wentworth and carried that a six months extension of time be granted to Mrs. Catherine R.Ryan to complete the un~inished duplex house located on the north side o~ Eighth Street between Church and Rosanna streets or by February lst,1950 and the City Clerk be instructed to notify Mrs.Ryan by letter that the time has been extended to this date,February 1,1949. A communication is read from the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce thanking the Mayor and Council for the favorable action on their proposal that the City take over the decorating of Monterey Street at Christmas time. A communication is read from Mr.Tom Sifton relative to a new motorcycle for the police department the communication setting forth the cost of the new machine tPlus rad io equipment and the allowance for the old motorcyole. Mr. Tom Sifton now appears before the Council to discuss his ..., .....I ..., I ..... J 1109 proposal. Motion by Councilman Stevens,seconded by Councilman Daniels and carried that the matter of purchase of a new motorcycle and radio equipment for same be placed in the hands of the Finance Committee for report and recommendation. A petition asking for surveys addressed to the Loma Prieta Soil ~...Wl' Conservation District is presented to the Council. Councilman Mason explains what the petitioners are endeavoring to have done and that the city's sewer farm land is included in the district. Mot ion by Counc ilman Thomas ,seoonded by counc ilman Wentworth am carried that the City of Gilroy subscribe to the petition addressed to the Loma Prieta Soil Conservation District requesting surveys be made in the area and the Mayor directed to sign the petition on #v.'" behaltf o~ the City. Applications for On Sale Beer License from Joseph Gelband,d.b.a. Luoky Club,2? S.Monterey Street and transfers of On Sale Beer License from Carmen A/Filice and Joe Fortino to Joe Fortino,d.b.a. Liberty Billiards,22l N.Monterey Street and transfer of On Sale General license from Joseph and Robert Elia to Robert Elia,d.b.a. Green Hut, ? N.Monterey Street are presented and read. No objection is made. Motion by CotL1lo1lman Daniels,seconded by Councilman Thomas and carried that Councilman Stout be granted peer.mission to leave the state for a period of thirty days. Motion by Counoilman Daniels,seoonded by COIncilman Thomas and carried that Councilman Wentworth be granted permission to leave the state for a period o~ two weeks. Petitions for installation o~ curbs and gutters fran residents on Dowdy Street between Third and Fourth streets and Fifth ana Sixth streets are presented and discussed. These petitions are referred to the Street Committee and the Engineering department. :! Counoilman Wentworth states that the Soroptimist Club was re- questing placing of tables in the park on North Monterey Street 1110 instead of the Optimist Club as he originally reported. The Mayor discusses information he has received that certain persons are pumptgg large quantities of water from the Uvas Creek above the city dam and warns that the oity should be very vigilant about its rights along this stream. Reports of the city officers are presenred and read. Motion by Councilman Stevens,seconded by Councilman Wentworth and carried that the reports of oity officers be accepted as read and placed on file.
