This regular nnnthlymeetingofthe Common Council is called to

Present: Coumcilmen George M.Mason,J .H. Wentwort.h ,Ray L. Stevens ,
James B.Thonas,David V.Stout,Dale D.Daniels.
Minutes of the meetings of September 6th,12th and 26th are read
and approved.
A communication from ~eorge Evans applying for a position on the
police department is presented and read and ordered placed on file.
A communication is read from the Department of Motor Vehicles,
Jii th,:ref'erence to establishing a full time offi ce in Gi lroy.
Motion by Councilman Stout,seconded by Councilman Daniels and
carried that the Clerk be instructed to write a letter to the Dep-
artment of J:lotor Vehicles asking that they consider putting in an
appropriation
_ at the next session 0 f the legislature to esta~1-s~ 3
a full time motor vehicle office in Gilroy and that a similar letter

be written to t he department in February, 1959.
A coramunication is read from Assemblyman John F.Thompson stating that
he will lend his sup~rt for the request to establish a full time
offi ce for the department: 0 f mo tor vehicles in Gilroy.
It is unanimously agreed that the same letters be written to Assembly-
r- man Thompson as are written to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

A petition signed by twenty-none property owners residing on
Chestnut Street asking that the condition of Chestnut Street be in-
vestigated to the end that repairs be made, is presented and read.
A petition signed by thirty-two residents and property owners
residing on Chestnut Street and Lewis Street requesting that a
bridge be built to cross from Chestnut Street to Lewis Street,is
presented and read.
The matter of building the bridge on Chestnut Street to join this
street with Lewis street is referred to the Street Committee for

investigation. and the Clerk is instructed to write a letter to John
Leal advising of the Council's action.
It is unan~mously agreed that a letter be written to John Leal
advising him to advise petition signers of the two methods the city
pursues in relurfacing streets.
A petition signed by five property owners and resid ing on South
Dpwdy Street bet\vuen 7th and 8th streets requesting t hat something
be done to alleviate the dust condition on Dowdy street is presented

A cormnunication is read from W.J.Hanna,City Engineer,stating that
work on certain streets under the maintenance agreement wwith the

Division of Highways has been completed,the total amount of the
work being $~,561.23 and advising that the total amount due on
completed work is $1,155.83.
Motion by Councilman :,'/entworth,sec onded by Councilman Stout that
George Augusta,contractor, be paid ~1,155.83 as recommended by the
City ~ngineer, on work completed on secondary streets under Maint-
enance agreement with the Division of Highways.

George Augusta, contractor, be paid the sum of ;k5,571.78 plus ';';237.06
for extra work under his comtract to resurface certain streets,as rec-
recommended by the City Engineer.
Councilmam Mason discusses fire insurance.
Lotion by Councilmam Llason,seconded by Councilman Stout and carried
that all fire insurance policies of the city be endorsed under the
ninety per cent caause.
Llotion by Councilman Thomas ,sec onded by Councilman stevens and
carried that that Charles Platt be hired to work in the fire depart-
ment and the stree t department at a salary of .)215.00 per month,
effective October 1,1949.
Councilman Thomas an...'1ounces that the date for the annual dinner
for the fire department and city em~loyees will be set by the Fire
Chief.
Councilman Stout discusses the value of having the City IJurchsing
Agent affiliate with the Northern Association of Purchashing Agents,
Northern California Group.
Motion by Councilman Stout,seconded by Councilman Wentworth and
carried that the PUrahasing Agent affiliate with the NortheDn
California Group of the Northern Association of Purchasing Agents,
the ci ty to pay the necessary fees.
City Marshal Goodrich now appears befo re the Council to discuss
the complaint of the Traffic Officer with respect to his unifcrm.
It is unanimously agreed that the Council does not approve any change
in the Traffic Officers' uniform.

Motion by Councilllan Stout,seconded by Councilman Daniels and carried
that the reDorts of city officers be accepted as read and placed on
fi le .
