This regular monthly meeting of the Common Council is called to
order by His Honor Mayor George C.Milias.
Present:Councilmen Carl W.Pate,Courtland M.Rush,J.Hughes Kennedy,
Charles Gallo,George W.White,Jack W.Ronald.
Minutes of the regular monthly meeting of January 5,1953 are read
and approved.
A communication is read from the County Controller showing a
total of $45,922.07 collected on city taxes to December 10,1952
and $4.71 collected on solvent credits with $229.63 as a collection
charge leaving a net amount of $45,697.15; a check in this amount
accompanying~e report. This communication is ordered filed.
A communication is read from the Coast Counties Gas and Electric
Company reporting the franchise tax for 1952 for gas-$2,964.07
andaectricity '3,630.32; a total of $6,594.39. These reports
are ordered filed.
A communication is read from the County Controller showing the
total amount of fines remitted to the city for the month of Dec-

ember as $1,404.00. This communication is ordered filed.
A communication is read from the County Sanitarian relative to
a complaint from Leland Corchero againstfue cattle pens at the
Gymkhana grounds. The Building Inspector states that Mr.Corchero
wants to move a dwelling onto the lo*t adjoing the Gymkhana stables
and that t he Future Farmers class at the high school is I:ieping some
of their livestock project animals in the stables.

Motion by Councilman White, seconded by Councilman Kennedy and carried
that the Corchero complaint be referred to the Building Inspector to
investigate and report to the Couneil1his findings.
A Notice of Time and Place of Further Hearing in the case of Barney
Eredia vs. City of Gilroy et al is presented and read. This matter is
referred to the City Attorney.
A communication is read from the Delano Chamber of Commerce relative
to the cost of erecting school buildings in this state. After some
discussion it is unanimously agreed to refer the communication to
Councilman White for study and to report to the Council.
A communication signed by twenty city employees re~uesting a 10%
raise in salaries and a cumulative sick leave at the rate of two weeks
per year,not to exceed six weeks, is presented and read.
Motion by Councilman Kennedy,se!onded by Councilman White and carried
that the matter of salary increases requested by city employees be
referred to the Finance Committee to report at the next regular meet-
ing of\:the Council.
A report of water samples taken by the Santa Clara County Health
Department during the month of January,1953 is presented and read
and ordered filed.
A report of arrests made and citations issued by the Gilroy Police
Department for~e month of January,1953 is presented and read and
ordered filed.
The report of the Building Inspector for the month of January,m953
is presented and read and ordered fi led.
Reports of the Poundmaster for the months of November and December,
1952 are presenjed and read and ordered filed.
An application for Police Officer from Clinton W.Doan is presented
and read and ordered placed on file.
A bond in the amount of $15,000.00 from George C.Renz foveringthe
installation of sewer andvwater mains,curbs gutters and sidewalks;
streets and alleys gravelled, graded and oiled;furn1shibg and installing
fire hydranjs and fire alarm boxes and street lights in Tract 1046,is
presented. The City Attorney advises that the agreement calledfor in
the bond should be drawn up and signed by Mr.Renz before the bond is
accepted.
The Mayor discusses the matter of backfilled trenches sinking and
the chairman of the street committee advises that an ordinance cover-
ing a uniform manner for backfilling trenches in streets and alleys
is being prepared.

The Mayor announces that he has had a request from the school boards
to have the Council represented at school board meetings to discuss
any street matters that may come before the board. The Mayor designates
Councilman Pate and City Engineer Hanna to represent the Council at
school board meetings.
The matter of and increase in pay for special police officers from
$10.00 per day to $11.25 per day is discussed by Councilman Pate. It
is unanimously agreed to lay this matter over until the matter of
salary increases is up for discussion.
The City Marshal now discusses the fbrmation of an Auxilliary Police
force statingfuat 30 men had been signed up andfuat each man would
work one night each month without pay and the men would be available
for work at parades or in an emergency.
The Constitution and By-Laws of the Gilroy Auxilliary police force
is now presented and read.
Motion by Councilman Kennedy,seconded by Councilman Pate and carr-
ied that the Constitution and By-Laws of the Gilroy Auxilliary Police
be accepted.
Motion by Councilman Pate, seconded by Councilman Gallo and carried
that the Police Department be allowed to use Wheeler A1Jditorium free
of charge for a dance on March 7,1953.
The Mayor now announces the death of Charles Pierce a former K
Councilman and Fire Chief.
Motion by Councilman White,seconded by Councilman Pate and carried
that flowers be ordered for the funeral of the late Charles Pierce
and flags on city buildings be flown at half staff until after the
funeral services.
The matter of cap badges and badges for the Auxilliary Police is
discussed and it is unanimously agreed to place this matter in the
hands of the Finance Committee and Purchasing Agent to report at
the next meeting offue Council.
City Marshal Sturla recommends that Jack Seadler be placed on a
permanent status as Police Officer.
Motion by Councilman Pate, seconded by Councilman Kennedy and carr-
iedfuat the recommendation of the City Marshal be accepted and that
Jack Seadler be hired as a regular Police Officer at the regular
salary of a Police Officer effective as of February 1,1953.
Councilman Pate presents a letter from the City Engineer's office
requesting the sum of $30.00 to defray expenses while attending the

Annual streets and Highways Conference sponsored by the Division of
Highways and the University of California to take place in Berkeley
February 4 to 7th,1953.
Motion by Councilman Pate, seconded by Councilman Ronald and carried
that the City Engineer be allowedfue sum of $30.00 to cover necessary
expenses while attending the Annual street and Highways Conference at
r the University of California,February 4th to 7th,1953.
Councilman Rush reports that Fireman Ted Green has been called into
the militaty service and this leaves a vacancy at the Fire House.
Motion by Councilman Rush,seconded by Councilman Kennedy and carried
that Lawrence Osborn be hired as a fireman at a salary of $270.00 per
month.
The Mayor now discusses the condition of the Acapulco Cafe,81 S.
Monterey street,as reported to him by the County Sanitarian. The
Building Inspector reports on his inspection of this place. It is
unanimously agreed that the Council should receive a written report
from the County Sanitarian
/about the Acapulco Cafe and will then decide on the course of action
to be taken.

Councilman Ronald presents a request from George C.RenZ to extend
the water~ain from its present end at the intersection of Broad~y
and Carmel street, west to the west boundary of the Renz property.

erence to the Council's action on the extension of water and other
services, is presented and read. It is unanimously agreed that Mr.
Renz should stand the entire expense of extending the water main from
the intersection of Broadway and Carmel Street to the west line of his
property.
Councilman Kennedy discusses the matter of the city taking over Oak
Court Park statingfuat Mr.Renz has offered to prepare the ground and
plantfue lawn if the city will install the necessary pipe andWlll care
for the lawn. The Clerk is instructed to check the minutes to ascertain
if the Council ever accepted this plot of ground as a park.
Reports of city officers are presented and read.
Motion by Councilman Ronald,seconded by Councilman Pate and carried
that the reports of city officers be8ccepted as read and placed on file.
Motion by Councilman Pate,secpnded by Councilman Ronald and carried
that bills as presented be allowed and~rrants drawn on the Treasurer.
