This regular adjourned meeting of the Common Council is called to
order by His Honor Mayor George C..Milias.
Present:Councilmen Carl W.Pate,Courtland M.Rush,J.Hughes Kennedy,
Charles Gallo,George W.Wh~te,Jack VI.Ronald.
The Mayor announces that the purpose of this meeting is to discuss
the proposed widening of j',iontereJ' Street and t he construction of a
median island.
The kayor calls for the report from Walter J.Hanna,Jr.,City Engineers
Office,and the Clerk proceeds to read the report of the result of
his Kisix discussion with the representatives of Division IV,Division
of Highways in San Francisco,June 11,1953.

The Clerk is now instructed by the Mayor to read a letter addressed
to him from the Di~ision of Highvv~s,Division IV and a copy of a
letter from Mr.G.T.McCoy,State Highway Engineer,to B.W.Booker,
Assistant State Highway Engineer,Division IV.
Walter J.Hanna,Jr. of the City ELgineers Office is called upon the
answer questions and a general discussion on the entire project
follows.
Councilman Rush states that his p ostion in the matter is that he
opposes spending the money for the widening of 'Of Monterey Street
when there are more important things we need.

Motion by Councilm~seconded by Councilman Gallo that the money
collected from the Sales Tax be used to improve the drainage on
Monterey Street and that the Sales Tax,in its present form,be
abolished.
The Mayor puts the question and calls for an Aye and Nay vote;
Ayes:Councilmen Rush and Gallo. Noes:Councilmen Pate,Kennedy,White,
Ronald.
Councilman Rush nows requests a roll call upon his motion. The
request is granted and the Clerk is instructed to call the ro~l:
Ayes: Councilmen Rush,Gallo.
Noes: Councilmen Pate,K ennedy,i'mite,Ronald.
The Mayor now declares the motion lost.
Mr.H.S.Hersman now appears before the Council to discuss the
proposed widening of Monterey Street and asks the Councilmen if
any of them had investigated other cities in which a dividing strip
had been constructed. Councilmen Pate,White,Ronald and Gallo respond
that they had noticed cities with the median island.
Councilman Pate requests that the city attorney draw a motion to
call for favorable action by the Council on the proposed widening
of I~:onterey Street with the median island and lind ting the city IS
obligatio~ to $150,000.00.
Councilman Pate now presents and reads the motion prepared by
the City Attorney.
I\;otion by Councilman Pate, seconded by Councilman Kennedy that
the Common Council of the City of Gilroy now goes on record as
favoring the improvement of Monterey Street by the widening thereof
as a cooperative undertaking with the Department of Pablic Works of
the State of California in accordance with the program outlined by
said Department of Public Works,to be conditioned on the obligation
of the Cit~r of Gilroy be limited to $150,000.00 as its share of the

cost OI the project and that a resolution be prepared Ior presentation
to the Council at its July 6th meeting which will include the require-
ments OI the Depart~ment OI Public Works as outlined in the letter OI
Walter J.Hanna,Jr.oI the City Engineer's OIfice,presented to the
Council at this meeting.
Councilman Pate now requests a roll call on the motion.
The Mayor now asks for the question and instructs the Clerk to pro-
ceed with the roll call on the motion by Couhcilman Pate.
Vote on the motion to adopt Councilman Pate's motion:
Ayes:
Councilman Pate,Kennedy,Vlhite,Ronald.
Councilmen Rush,Gallo.
Noes:
The Mayor now decl.ares Councilman Pate's motion is carried.
