This regular adj ourned meeting 0 f the Common Council is called
to order by His Honor Mayor <George M.Mason.
Present:Councilmen Carl W.Pate,Charles Gal10,J.Hughes Kennedy,
Courtland M.Rush,Kenneth L.Petersem,Segundo Sanchez.
This being the time specif'ied in a legal publication calling for
bids for the resurfacing of Hanna Street f'rom Broadway to Sixth
Street,Roaanna Street from First to Sixth Street and Second Street
from Church Street to Hanna Stneet the Mayor now instructs the
Clerk to wroceed with the opening of the bids.
Four bids are presented and read:Wi1liam Radtke and Son-$21,589.30;
George C.Renz Construction Company,Inc.-$21,695.04;Leo F.Piazza
Paving Company-$19,508.24;Granite Construction Company-$17,967.72.
The City Engineer and City Attorney are now instructed to ex~e
the bids for calcu1ation,etc.
Councilman Pate discusses the possibility of channelization of
of traffic at Leavesley Road and Monterey Street. It is unanimously
agreed that this matte~ be discussed with the Resident Engineer of
the Division of' Highw~s,the chairman of the street Committee and
the City Administrator and a report made to the Council on their
findings.
Councilman Pate discusses the matter of the parking of trucks
on Monterey Street between Second Street and Seventh Street in
view of' the cut back of the sidewalks and the present position of
many of the electric signs. ~t is stated by the Councilman that

if the trucks were prevented from parking on Monterey street between
Second and Seventh streets that it would not be necessary to move any
of the electric signs. The matter of and ordinance governing the park-
ing of trucks be referred to the City Attorney for investigation.
The City Engineer and City Attorney now report that they have
completed examining the bids for street resurfacing and that they have
found the ~ranite Construction Company to be in order and the lowest

bid.
Motion by Councilman Pate,seconded by Councilman Kennedy ~d carried
that the bid of Granite Construction Company in the amount of $17,967.72
for t he resurfacing of Hanna street from Broadway to Sixth Street,
Rosanna street from First Street to Sixth Street and Second Street
from ChurCh Street to Hanna Street be accepted Won recommendation of
the City Engineer and the City Attprney.
Motion by Councilman Rush,seconded by Councilman Kennedy and carried
that the Gilroy Gliders Club be granted free use of Wheeler Auditorium
for the annual Folk Dance Festival on October 2,1954.
The City Marshal presents a communltcation recommending t hat John
DOherty,611 SWanston Lane,be appoited Special Police.

Motion by Councilman Rush,seconded by Councilman Pate and carried
that the recommendation of the City Marshal be accepted and John Doherty
be appointed Special Police for the period July 1,1954 to July 1,1956.
Councilman Pate reports that the damage done by P. and E.Inc. to
Eighth street has been repaired. It is unanimously agreed to waive
the $200.00 withheld from P. & E.,Inc. for street damage and that
P. and E. ,Inc. be paid the balance due on t heir contract on September
6,,1954.
Councilman Sanchez now reports on the drainage matter on Miller
Sloggh at the east end of the 8th Street Outfall storm Sewer and state s
that Dr.E.J.Chesbro a member of the the flbod control commission for
this area fO~uSanta Clara County had advised him that organization of
the county-wide commission had not been completed nor provision made
~ for the securing of funds.
Mr.Robert K.Byers,Frank Serafin and Albert Vosti "representing Gentry,
Inc. are present and join in the discussion of the matter of drainage
in Miller Slough southeast of the out1est of the 8th Street Outfall
storm Sewer.
The matter of P.M.A. assistance is discussed along with additional
cost over and above the P.M.A.allotment for the drainage work.

Motion by Councilman Sanchea,seconded by Councilman Pate and
carried that appeal be made to the South Santa Clara Valley Water
Conservation District and the Board of Supervisors of Santa Clara
County for aid in the financing of the necessary work to widen and
cieepen Miller Slough from Pacheco Pass Road at t he east end of
the Eighth street Outfall storm Sewer to the Llagas Creek.
Councilman Pate discusses the matter of trucks exceeding the 25
mile and hour speed limit on Monterey Street.'
Motion by Councilman Petersen,seconded by Councilman Pate and
carried that the City Clerk write a letter to the City Marshal
and send a copy of this letter to each of the Police Officers
asking them to be diligent in enforcing the 25 mile and hour speed
on Monterey Street.
The City A&ninistrator is instructed to contact the Resident
Engineer of the Division of Highways and request that "STOP AHEADlI
be painted on the pavement. on either side of the intersection of
Fifth and Eigelberry streets.
The matter of bids for police cars is discussed in view of
manufacturers changing models at the present time. It is agreed to
consider t he bids presented at ,the September 7th meeting.
The City Attorney now presents and reads RESOLUTION NO.331.
Motion by Councilman Kennedy,seconded by Councilman Petersen
that RESOLUTION NO.331 be adopted.

BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Gilroy enter into the lease
or licensing Agreement dated the 9th day of JUly,1954 submitted
by the said SOUTHERN PACIFIC CmMPANY covering the construction,
maintenance and operation of a 27-inch corrugated metal pipe
line crossing north of Martin Lane,in the City of Gilroy,and
that the Mayor o~ the said City of Gilroy be and he is hereby
authorized to execute the said Agreement on behalf of the said
City of Gilroy.

The City Attorney now presents and discusses a ~ase with the Coast
Counties Gas and Electric Company for a portion of land owned by the
city and located at the northeast corner of East and Old Gilroy streets.
The City Attorney now presents and reads RESOLUTION NO.322.
Motion by Councilman Pate, seconded by Councilman Petersen that

RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING RENEWAL OF'_,LEASE BETWEEN THE CITY OF GILROY
MJD THE COAST COUNTIES GAS AND ELECTRIC COMPANY.
~REREAS, the City of Gilroy did on the second day of October,1944,
enter into a written Lease wherein it did rent and Lease to the Coast
Counties Gas and Electric Company,a corporation, the following described
property located in the City of Gilroy,County of Santa Clara,State of
California,and more particularly described as fo110ws,to-wit:
BEING in Block 2 South,Range 7 East,as shown on Map No.8
accompanying the report of the referee s in the Las Animas
Rancho partition suit of Henry Miller et a1 vs.Massey Thomas
et al in the Superior Court of the State of California in
and for the County of Santa Clara,Case No.5536,and is more
particularly described as follows:
BEGINNING at the point of intersection of the Northerly line
of Old Gilroy Street with the Easterly line of East Street;
thence Northerly along the Easterly line of East Street 50.00
feet;thence a right angles Easterly 20.00 feet;thence at right
angles Southerly and parallel to East street 57.22 feet to the
northerly line of Old Gilroy Street;thence Westerly along the
said line 21.27 feet to the point of beginning.
Surveyed and mmnumented Aug 14,1~44 by W.J.Hanna,Registered
Civil Engineer No.3704,City Engineer of Gilroy
and,
ViliEREAS,the said lease provided for a term expiring on the ~lst
day of August,1954 and contained provision giving said Coast Counties
Gas and Electric Company the option of renewing the lease under the
same terms and conditions and for the same rental for an additional
period of ten (10) years upon giving the Lessor at least six (6)
months notice of the Lessees of its intention to renew the lease;and
WHEREAS, the said lessee has given the said Lessor more than
6 months prior to the expiration of said term of the said'lease its
written notice of its election to exercise such option.
NOW,THEREFOREh be it resolved that the said Lease be renewed for
and additional period of ten (10) years from and after its expiration
upon the same terms and conditions set forth in the said lease dated
Otcober 2,1944 and that the Mayor be and he is hereby authorized to
execute on behalf of the said City of Gilroy a new lease with the said
Coast Counties Gas and Electric Company containing the same terms and
conditions set forth in the former Lease excluding the provision
giving the Lessee an pption for renewal.

Building Inspector Byron Brown now appears before the Council to dis-
cuss the request of several service station operators to place signs

Mr.Phil West, Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce,now appears
before the Council to invite the Mayor and Councilmen to attend
the next meeting of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of

The City Marshal now requests the hiring of one foot patrolman
on
to work nightsipaturd~s,and Sund~s during the summer season.It
is unanimously agreed to grant the City Marshal's request and
authcrrize him the hire one foot patrolman to work night on Sat-
urd~s and Sund~s during the summer season.
There being no further business to come before this meeting the
Mayor now declares this meeting adjourned.
