This regular monthly meeting of the Common Council i~ called to
order by His Honor Mayor George M.Mason.
Present:Councilmen Carl W.Pate,Charles Gallo,J.Hughes Kennedy,
Courtland M.Rush,Kenneth L.Petersen,Segundo Sanchez.
The Mayor now calls upon the Rev.Allen E.Breed to give the
invocation.
The Mayor now asks if all councilmen have received copies of the
minutes of the regular monthly meeting of May 8th, the regular
adjourned meeting of May 28th, the special meeting of June 1 and
the ~djourned meeting of June 1,1956.
All Councilmen answer in the affirmative.
The Mayor now asks if there are any errors or corrections to be
- made in the minutes. ~

No errors being noted and no corrections to be made t{te Mayor now
declares the minutes of the regular monthly meeting of May 8th,the

regular adjourned meetirtg of May.28th,the special meeting of June 1st
and the adjourned meeting of June 1,1956,approved.
Councilman Gallo states that he has no report on additional street
lighting for the residential area.
A communication is read from Miller & Lux,Inc.with reference to
leasing the Las Animas Hospital Reservation site by the city. This
communication is ordered filed.

Reports of the Building Inspector,Police Department and Pound-
master are presented and read.

An application for an On Sale General license from Richard G.
Thrasher and Joseph L.Puppo,d.b.a.The Green Hut,21 N.Monterey
Street,is presented and read.No objection is made.
Reports of City pfficers are presented and read.

Motion by Councilman Pate, seconded by Councilman Rush and

carried that the reports of City officers be accepted as read
and placed on file.
Motion by Councilman Rush, seconded by Councilman Pate that
bills as presented be allowed and warrants ordered drawn on the
Treasurer.
Councilman Rush now presents a giftjto outgoing Councilman
Kennedy and outgoing Mayor George M.Mason.
The Mayor acknowledges the gift and thanks the members of the
Council for their cooperation during his term of office.
Councilman Kennedy responds thanking the Councilmen for their
fine relations during his term @ftice.
Motion by Councilman Kennedy,seconded by Councilman Rush and

carried that this meeting adjourn sine die.
The Clerk now proceeds to swear in the new Mayor and Council.
Mayor George C.Milias now occupies the Mayor's chair. and orders
a roll call.
Present:Councilmen Carl W.Pate,Sig Sanchez,Charles Gallo,Kenneth
L.Petersen,Courtland M.Rush,Everett C.Wentworth.
Mayor Milias thanks the outgoing Mayor and members of the Cttncil
for their work over the preceeding two years.
The Mayor now asks for the appointment of a City Attorney.
Motion by Councilman Pate, seconded by Councilman Rush and carried
that Sydney S.Johnson be City Attorney for the ensuing two years.
The Mayor now presents his Council Committee appointments stating

that he has changed the Police Committee from the entire Council
to a committee of three and requests that this committee meet once
a month with the City Marshal to discuss police problems and any
other matters that may properly come before the committee. The
Mayor also states that he has created a new committee-Industrial
Committee- and urges this committee to meet with the Industrial
Committee of the Chamber of Commerce ~ to coordinate their efforts

to secure industries for the community.
The Mayor now discusses the matter of lighting in the Renz Tract;
a lawn for the pumping plant at First and Princevalle streets;the
painting of the doors at the Auditorium building;a fire station
for the East side of the City;a swimming pool for community use;

a new pipe line from the Uvas dam to the reservoir.
The Mayor urges that the Council consider having two meetings
each month instead of one. All Councilmen indicate they favor two
meetings each month.
A communication is read from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Parade
Committee reauesting a donation from the city to carryon this
functioti.
Motion by Councilman Petersen, seconded by Councilman Pate and
carried that the sum of $100.00 be given to the Veterans of Foreign
Wars Parade Committee for advertising.
Councilman Pate discusses the matter of limiting parking on
Eigelberry Street between Third and Fourth streets to two hours.
Councilman Pate reports that the Purity Stores have completed

their negotiations to procure the necessary land for the extension

of Alexander Street south of 9th Street to the South City Limits.
The matter of the bridge across the Llagas Creek at the City Sewer
farm is discussed. It is recommended that the new Sewer Committee
meet with the old Sewer Committee to bring the new committee up to
date on what has taken place with reference to the bridge.
The City Attorney reports that he has an Agreement signed by
William Radtke & Son agreeing to postpone to awarding of the
contract for the bridge at the Sewer Farm for a period of 30 days.
The City Attorney now presents and reads the Agreement signed by

William Radtke & Son. It is agreed that no further action is
necessary.

Councilman RUBh discusses the request of Bud Taylor to take loam

from the city's Owsley Park property. This matter is referred to

the Buildings and Grounds Committee for investigation and report.
Councilman Gallo reports on his efforts to secure lighting for the
Renz Tract and the City Attorney reports that he has the legal
matters practically solved and will have this matter ready for the

A communication is read from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Parade

.Committee inviting the Mayor,Councilmen and City officials to
ride in the parade on Saturday,June 9th. The Mayor urges all
Councilmen and city officials to take advtange of this invitation.
A communication is read from the Concessions Committee of the
Gilroy Gymkhana and Horse Show requesting that no charge be made

that will be in Gilroy during the Gymkhana.
Mr.O.C.Cavin,owner of land in the "Second Northern Kddition
to the City of Gilroy" now appears before the Council to discuss
the changein drainage made on his property and the extension
of the 50 foot right of way from Monterey Road. Mr.Cavin is
advised that the drainage matter is in the hands of the County
Flood Control Committee and is referred to the City Engineer for
further information.
A bid for a new police motorcycle from Sam Arena is presented
and read. This matter is referred to the Police Committee for
investigation.

carried that this meeting adjourn to Monday,June 18,1956 at
8 o'clock P.M.,Council chambers,City Hall,Gilroy,California.
