This special meeting of the Common Council called by the Mayor by
mailing letters to members of the Council and the press more than
twenty-four hours in advance of the meeting is called to order by
His Honor Mayor George C.Milias.

Present:Councilmen Carl W.Pate,Sig Sanchez,Charles Gallo,Courtland
M.Rush,Everett C.Wentworth. Absent:Councilman Kenneth L.Petersen.
The Mayor states that the purpose of this meeting is to discuss
and pass upon the budget for the fiscal year 1956-1957iset the tax
rate for the fiscal year 1956-1957 and discuss the purchase of the
old Bank of America property located at 116 North Monterey Street.
Councilman Pate, chairman of the Finance Committee, now presenta~
the 1956-1957 budget as recommended by his committee and reviews
the items in the budget. The chairman states that the committee
recommends that the Monterey Street lighting be paid off for an
estimated amount of $35,000.00.and tkH t~e tax rate for the fiscal

Councilman Petersen now accupies his seat at the Council table.
r- The Mayor recommends an increase in the appropriation for the
L- Council Industrial Committee from $1000.00 to $3,000.00.
Mr.Robert K.Byers,presiednet of the Board of Trustees of the
Gilroy Public Library, appears before the Council and states that
the operating budget for the Library is satisfactory but the cost
of improving the basement of the library building has increased over
the $7,500.00 originally requested the previous year. Mr.Byers is
advised to present the plans and specifications to the Council in
order that bids may be ~alled for.

Motion by Councilman Wentworth, seconded by Councilman Gallo and
carried that the budget for the fiscal year 1956-1957 as presented
by the Finance Committee be accepted and the tax rate for the fiscal
year 1956-1957 be $1.50 per $100.00 of assessed valuation.
The Clerk is instructed to write a letter to the Pacific Gas and
ask
Electric Company and/them the amount necessary to retire the indebted-
ness on the Monterey Street electroliers.
The matter of salary increases for all city employees and elected
officials is discussed and the matter of creating compatible positions
for elected officials is discussed. This matter is placed in the hands
of the Finance Committee.
The matter ~f purchase pf the old Bank of American property is left

to the Finance Committee to investigate and report to the Council.
The Clerk now presents and reads the rates to apply to the 1956-
1957 tax rate:
