This special meeting o~ the Common Council is called to or-
der by His Honor Sig Sanchez.
Present: Councilmen Courtland M. Rush, Kenneth L. Petersen,
Everett C. Wentworth, and Wilford E. Jordan.
Absent; Councilmen Carl W. Pate and Charles Gallo.
The City Clerk is instructed to read a Police Report signed
by Sergeant E. Piedmont and another report signed by Patrolman
Gerald Jewell and Eugene Jewell concerning an altercation bet-
ween Sergeant Daniel J. Lemos and Patrolman Robert L. Baker.
There is a general discussion among the Councilmen concern-
ing the action of the officers. The City Clerk is now asked to

read a letter from Marshal Sturla which recommends one year
probation for each officer. There is a discussion about the
recommendation. Marshal Sturla is asked by Mayor Sanchez if
he was any other comments to which the Marshal replies he
would like to change the recommendation of the year probation
to reprimanding Sergeant Daniel J. Lemos and Patrolman Robert
L. Baker with a warning not to let the incident occur again.
There is a discussion on the Marshal's last recom-
mendation. A motion is made by Councilman Rush second by
Councilman Jordan that the Marshal's last recommendation be
adopted.
At this point the Mayor requests the City Attorney
to draft a statement for the press which would give them the
action of the Council. The Attorney drafts the statement.
The statement to the press is discussed and accepted by the
Council.
Motion by Councilman Rush second by Councilman
Wentworth and carried that this Special Meeting be adjourned
to November 2, 1959, at S:OO plm. Council Chambers, City
Hall, Gilroy, California.
