The Special Meeting of the Gilroy City Council was called to
order by His Honor Mayor Norman B. Goodrich "at 7:40 p.m.
Present: Council Members: George T. Duffin, John Hughan,
John E. Pate, Anthony C. Silva, David V. Stout and Norman B. Goodrich.
Absent: Council Member: Fred P. Batrez.
The Mayor stated that the purpose of the Special Meeting was
called to discuss with Gavilan College School representatives the James
Allan & Sonsl Meat Processing Proposal.
City Administrator Wood reported in regard to action taken
by the Planning Commission and City Council in regard to the James Allan
& Sons Meat Processing Plant locating in Gilroy.
Councilman Batrez entered at 7:44 p.m. and took his seat at
the Council table.
Dr. Ralph Schroder, President of the College, addressed the
Councfl and noted concern of the Collage in regard to zoning on the west
side of 101 Freeway to the College.
The Mayor explained on behalf of the Council that they were
extremely interested in proper housing and future development in the
area of the college.
Discussion was had by Council in regard to said zoning between
the 101 Freeway and Gavilan College area. Council generally agreed that
in accordance with the General Plan primarily industry is proposed for
the east side of the freeway, with the exception of a buffer highway
commercial zone immediately adjacent to the wes~ side of the freeway only.
It was further noted that the City would not concur with zoning on the
west side of the 101 Freeway or near Gavilan College prior to discussion
with the Gavi1an College Board.
The following representa tives from the Gavi Ian College seated
within the audience indicated their concern as to the zoning proposed in
the area of the college: Mrs. Bonnie Simonsen, President of the Board
of Trustees; Sylvester Heinberg, Dean of Instruction; and George Thomas,
Trustee.

Adjournment
Processing Plant addressed the Council and explained the proposal for
the Gilroy Plant, noting construction plans, etc. that had previously
been pres$lnted at the f\ugust 2, 1971 COLlnci 1 meeting. He further
invited Gavilan College Officials to visit their plant in San Francisco.
Gavilan College representatives further requested that the
college be placed upon the city's mailing list for receiving Council
Minutes and Agendas.
At 9: 10 p.m. the Mayor adjourned the meeting.
