RESOLUTION NO. 78-18
RESOLUTION OF THE GILROY CITY COUNCIL HONORING SUPERVISOR
SIG SANCHEZ UPON HIS PLANNED RETIREMENT FROM PUBLIC SERVICE.
~IEREAS, Sig Sanchez plans to retire from the County of Santa
Clara Board of Supervisors at the end of his present term; and
vnIEREAS, his community of Gilroy has determined to honor him for
his twenty-five (25) years of devoted public service; and
vJHEREAS, Sig served the City of Gilroy as a Councilman :B.rom May 3,
1954 through May 5, 1958, and as Mayor of Gilroy from May, 1958, to
January, 1963, and substantially contributed to the following local
accomplishments:
1) Classification and Compensation Plan for City Employees.
2) Adopted a Civil Defense and Disaster Plan.
3) Employees' Retirement Plan.
4) Princevalle Storm Drain Project.
5) New City Charter.
6) Acquired existing Judicial Court Site.
7) Hired Gilroy's first Chief of Police.
8) Began planning for off-street parking plan.
9) Began installment purchase of Christmas Hill Park.
10) Adopted Zoning Ordinance.
11) Appointed first full-time Building Inspector.
12) Filed water rights on the Little Arthur Creek.
13) Many other accomplishments that lack of space does not allow
listing at this time; and
~IEREAS, he served the people of Supervisorial District No.1 for
sixteen (16) years, serving on three (3) occasions as Chairman of that
body, serving with a distinction of responsiveness and untiring devotion
to the people he represented; and
WHEREAS, Sig is a Past President of the County Supervisors
Association of California, and currently on their Board of Directors
and Executive Committee with limited number of his tenure accomplishments
being:

1) Santa Clara County Expressway System.
2) Creation of a County Water District.
3) Establishment of the County Transit District.
4) Establishment of Local AgencyFormation Commission.
S) South County Health Clinic.
6) South County Airport.
7) Adopted policy requiring urban services to be provided by
municipalities.
8) Established centralized County Communications Service.
9) Many other accomplishments that cannot be fully listed here.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and City Council,
on behalf of the people of Gilroy, do hereby take this opportunity to
honor a gentleman who has spent a major part of his life in the service
of his community, making an impressive transition from rancher to County
Supervisor through the precepts of honesty and good common sense.
BE IT FURTHER PESOLVED that our County will suffer a great loss
and inspiration upon the retirement of Sig Sanchez. We wish him and
his fine family every continued success and will continue to rely upon
his constructive counsel during the future.
