The first log is the Work Crew Log which outlines who was out and what they were checking on Monday, February 17. The latter part of the document relates to our crews reporting of water heights in certain sections of the south end. This log had to be compiled from the memories of our people, so that is why you see a plus/minus sign behind each time entry. The second log is the Emergency Operations Center log from Monday morning through Wednesday morning. The log is taken by a secretary who attempts to list all the events taking place in the E.O.C. Reading each log will hopefully give you a better ide~ of the events of the flood. Since this document is still preliminary, we ask that it be held confidential until we know we positively have all the data. During last October's League of California Cities Meeting, many of you attended a seminar called, IICommunicating Effectively Under Pressurell conducted by Arch Lustberg, President of Arch Lustberg Communications. Many of the points he made during the seminar were utilized by Staff at our Monday, February 24, Press Conference. Just for information, I would like to pass them on to you, as I believe Monday will be pressure-packed. 1) Do not take any comment personally. Stay objective and in control. 2) If starting to take verbal abuse, respond positively in a caring way. Kill them with love and that takes the heart out of the opposition. 3) If interrupted, respond positively. If interrupted again, play for the sympathy of the group by sayi ng somethi ng 1 i ke, II I wi 11 answer your first question first, and then I will answer your next concern.1I If the response is in a positive tone, there is a tendency for the crowd to slow down to allow an answer. City Council Page Two February 28, 1986 4) When asked a question, pause and think before you talk and respond positively. Do not repeat buzz words and negative statements. 5) Your face should be open and receptive, not neutral or frowning. Smile a genuine smile. Portray love. 6) Your body should be open and leaning forward. Use positive hand gestures. 7) Your voice should have a quiet volume; add pitch to your voice, not a monotone. 8) Eye contact with the person asking the question is critical. Look at him/her as you respond. If the answer is long, you can then move your eyes across the crowd. 9) If men are wearing sports coats, also wear a longsleeve shirt. In actual use, Arch's ideas worked for Staff last Monday; hopefully, they will help all of us this Monday. One last note, we have been in contact with our insurance attorney because of the lawsuit threats. He strongly urges caution in all of our replies for the obvious reasons. See you Monday!
