A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF GILROY ENDORSING THE "PLANT — EAT - SHARE"
CAMPAIGN
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Gilroy has identified as a 2013 -2018 Goal
the need to create a more livable Gilroy community for all, and as such recognizes that an
enhanced quality of life can be supported by providing access to healthy foods and organic
gardening; and,
WHEREAS, food security is recognized as a fundamental component of enabling people
and communities to enjoy health and well- being; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Gilroy is committed to pursuing strategies to increase access to
healthful foods, particularly in low income or nutritionally- deficient areas.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY
RESOLVES to endorse the proposal of the "Plant — Eat - Share" campaign, proposed by the
non -profit Valley Verde as follows:
Valley Verde (VV) builds food self - sufficiency among vulnerable Santa Clara County residents
and revitalizes neighborhoods by installing and supporting organic home gardens. These two key
principles guide Valley Verde's mission by empowering low- income and nutritionally- deficient
residents to become self - sufficient, lifelong gardeners, growing culturally appropriate food and
sharing their skills with family and community; thus democratizing the organic, locally grown
food movement; and bridging resources and passion for gardening across lower and higher -
income residents of the region, thus building strong, relational networks of organic gardeners.

The "Plant - Eat - Share" campaign will result in 20,000 new home organic gardens across the
Silicon Valley region by 2022 and will raise awareness about food security to create a platform
to organize people and communities around urban agriculture for equal access to healthy food.
